Dale Murphy was arguably the best player of the 80s - finished 2nd in HRs, 1st in RBIs, 5th in hits and was a perennial gold glove winner in centerfield. Back to back MVPs and might have won a few more but for playing on terrible Braves teams.

I wouldn't say he fell apart in his prime but he dropped off a cliff as soon as it ended. Such a shame too because he was such a good guy and one of the nicest to ever play the game. His swan dive cost him a plaque in the HOF and a spot on those great 90s Braves teams that always played in the World Series.

I was going to post Murphy. Surprised it took so long to see his name. And as you say, although it started at what would fall in the normal range his decline was incredibly swift.

Guy was amazing through his prime... Just age related decline

People aren’t used to seeing players age. The last batch of superstars were Rouses our and played forever

Rick Ankiel as a pitcher. Crazy after that mental wall he was able to play OF for several more years.

This is who popped into my head. It's such an underrated crazy story. He was 20 years old, had a 3.50 ERA in the steroid era and won rookie of the year.

Then, he just stopped being able to throw strikes. No injuries, no overt reason, just couldn't hit the strike zone and disappeared.

Then, in the minors, he reinvented himself as an outfielder and played 8 years in the majors as a respectable outfielder.

He didn't win ROY. Furcal won that year. But it was incredible he even made it back as a position player. When he retired from pitching I never thought he would sniff the majors again. I think someone is going to film a movie about him.

Sorry, Baseball reference had a ROY hyperlink listed, but it was to him finishing 2nd behind Furcal.

I agree on the movie or documentary. He had the 8th lowest ERA as a 20 year old and might have been the best pitching prospect of the generation. Then, he abruptly stopped being able to throw the ball over the plate, struggled for a year or two and disappeared.

Then, he was back in 2007 as an outfielder and was actually decent. It's a crazy story.

I can't think of many players quitting one position, and coming back at another position. I know Ruth did, but no one today saw it. Bush came back as a reliever a long time after he had so many setbacks. Who else?

Elvis Grbac. Started and played well for Kansas City for a few years. Signed a big contract with Baltimore after their Super Bowl run but didn't play up to expectations. The front office tried to renegotiate his contract in the offseason but ultimately decided cut him instead. Grbac never played in the NFL again. I think he was right around 30 when he retired, so right in the middle of his prime for a QB.

Ronda Rousey had a pretty good run for about 3-4 years... that loss to Holm was devastating to her psych.

Another great boxer was Felix Trinidad. He was undefeated before losing to Hopkins then retired at a pretty young age... I think he fought a few more times later but was never the same guy.

Surprised more people aren't saying this. He had 4 great years to start his career and then nothing.

Two players that automatically come to mind are Grant Hill and Tracy Mcgrady. They both arguably couldve been top 20 top 25 players based on how their careers going. But injuries messed them up bad. So now we can only speculate.
