I like Tiger but to me it is hilarious how ESPN covers him.

Is it? In 25 years, he has generated BILLIONS of dollars of revenue for ESPN, Nike, The PGA Tour itself and all its sponsors. He’s made more millionaires than probably anybody in sports history. The dude who finishes #20 in purse money this year, will probably win more than Jack Nicklaus did his entire career. There are hundreds of guys that before Tiger would either be selling insurance or making $40k as their local club pro because ranked 100th(ish) in the world would have forced them to retire a long time ago, who are now multimillionaires, flying all over in private jets to play the greatest and most beautiful golf courses in the world with OT 8s and 9s by their side.

ESPN: "Golf really needs another star to take over in Tigers place"

I’ve never heard anybody say this earnestly. Because they know it will never happen. It can’t. There may wind up being somebody better than him, but there will never be anyone to recreate anything resembling the phenomenon that was and still is Tiger Woods. Mainly because he made golf cool and there are way more people playing and way more really, really talented guys on tour.

There are a ton of incredibly talented, young guys out there. Guys that if they were born 20 years earlier, could have been all-time top 10 type guys. But there’s so many of them that they’ll cannibalize themselves more likely, which on a micro, week-to-week level is really fun to watch, but kind of a bummer on a macro level because we may not see the historical rivals because there’s just too many of them. But they’re there because 1) Tiger made golf cool, and 2) made the money so good that you can be ranked like 75th in the world and have an incredible quality of life.

I’d be watching anyway, but I don’t think it’s “funny” how ESPN covers Tiger. It’s financially responsible. Because there are a bunch of middle-aged men like me (who signed up for the ESPN app in the 1st place to watch coverage of a major) who got up early to watch a dude about my age, 13 shots off the lead with zero chance of winning, hack it and hobble around the golf course (and somehow still make scores). It’s actually incredible. Probably more so than we even realize.

(And this is not a Tiger arse-kissing post. It’s more about the 25-year phenomenon that was and still is Tiger Woods and how we still may not be far enough away from it to appreciate it’s cultural and financial impact.)

After that tl;dr post, one about the actual tourney— the guys on the golf channel last night were talking about just how much easier the guys who went off late had it yesterday. Saying JT’s round was incredible considering the early conditions, and though he’s not leading, may be playing the best and be in the best position to really overtake the current leaders because the wind’s gonna pick up and the greens are gonna dry out later in the day.

What I didn’t hear them say was who are some of the guys that are gonna catch the course just right but aren’t too far behind to really make a move. Who do you guys like that may be right around even right now, but are playing better than that and just got hosed on their off-times?

That’s some serious and TRUE stuff you just posted…. What Tiger did for the game of golf is on par with what babe Ruth did to the home run craze in baseball. What Ruth did in 1921 season will never be duplicated. What Tiger did for golf will never be matched if you look at the whole picture of what he did.

Jesus...nobody is arguing what Tiger Woods did for the game of golf...but this coverage for The Masters and now the PGA is garbage!!! Stop following Tiger...he’s +10 the love of god. I mean he is absolute shite and yet we have to watch every fricking swing. This doesn’t even feel like a major the way it’s being covered. PGA and we’re watching a +10 golfer...and yet the fan boys love it.

Edit...My bad...+12

It’s cool there, but dang, that seemed like overkill for temps in the upper 50s.

Hey I see what you are saying and it’s just terrible to watch one of the best ever to struggle like he is. But ESPN truly believes they are getting high ratings just because Tiger is playing.

Tiger is painful to watch. Had a chip off the green for eagle and is going to bogey

Tiger is entered and went by Sandy Lyle and Larry Mize territory today. This is painful to watch him breakdown. But making the cut is a fkn accomplishment

I know you don’t want to hear it, and you probably won’t believe it, but when they stop showing Tiger their viewership drops significantly. That’s just the truth. If you owned a network would you show who you personally want to see or would you show who brings in the most viewers?

Yeah agreed, him making the cut is pretty amazing and the bandwagon golf fan wants to watch Tiger regardless of how he is doing.

Sorry state for CBS. Guy could be +20 and we'll all be forced to watch. He never should've been there. Egomaniac

Apparently he should have been there since he made the cut. So you’re wrong.

Well I’m watching the tourney right now. And I would still be watching even if Tiger was not there.
