Stakes matter and expanding the playoffs decreases the stakes across the board

This is such an awful argument

The top four seeds will get byes and you have to win your conference as well that means there's still great pressure on teams to not only win their conference but finish in the top four.

The next four seeds get to play at home in the first round again also pretty significant.

So the top 8 seeds consist of 6 conference champs and two higly ranked at large teams. The stakes will still be very high at the end of the season only it's for proper seeding not trying to beat a broken system.

In 2019 for example these four teams would get byes

LSU
Clemson
Ohio State
Oklahoma

Meanwhile these teams play at home in the first round

Oregon
Memphis
Georgia
Baylor

These are your next four teams based on ranking

Wisconsin
Florida
Utah
Penn State

This means your seeds are

1. LSU vs (9. Wisconsin @ 8. Baylor)
4. Oklahoma vs (12. Penn State @ 5. Oregon)

2. Clemson vs (10. Florida @ 7. Georgia)
3. Ohio State vs (11. Utah @ 6. Memphis)

Now given how good LSU was that year we probably get the same champ, but there are a lot of good matchups here

I get the "regular season pointless" people to an extent, but doesn't any postseason make any regular season pointless?

In the NBA and NHL, over half the teams make the playoffs for God's sake!

It meant everything because if LSU lost they were almost assuredly out of the title picture.

A 1 loss LSU wouldn’t have been out of the pictureS

Nvm this playoff itself would create 11 literal life or death games.

I remember Bill Hancocks Playoff scenarios press conference he gave to show how it would work. he went back and did the playoff for 3 separate years to show how it'd work with each rotation. Sounded awesome.

The actual product we got on the field was nothing like that. It was the same matchups year after year and mostly blowouts.

Mostly it’s going to be a bloodbath of fringe group of 5 and power 5 teams get mowed down by the 10-2 type SEC squads, followed by an even bigger bloodbath a week later in the quarterfinals as worn down sacrificial lambs meet the top 4, and then another the next week in the semis.

I agree with you in the near-term this will be the case. But long-term this makes the playoffs accessible by any FBS school, and thus will hopefully bring a little more parity amongst CFB.

I know that would absolutely be the case without the transfer portal, but I honestly don't know what CFB will look like moving forward with the transfer portal + 12-team CFB playoff. Way too many knobs and levers being turned and pulled in a short amount of time to predict how everything plays out long-term.

And the NBA players barely even try until like the second or third round of the playoffs

The NHL thank god has a culture of working your arse off on every shift and if you don't you're highly shamed by the fans, players, coaches, etc... The NHL is just a totally different attitude but it won't last forever. Eventually they'll get just as spoiled as the rest of the pro athletes.

Even with 3 losses I think those two teams I listed would be a lock. 4 losses I think the door would be open for them as well.

Bama would have missed it in 2019 with 2 losses.

frick that, I like betting on Georgia southern vs Toledo

Georgia Southern vs. Toledo won't be going anywhere

the bowls to be eliminated will be the P5 6-6 vs. 7-5 teams against each other

No they wouldn’t have.

They would’ve got in over a few of the teams that were ranked slightly ahead of them with the same number of losses, the committee isn’t going to vote the same way on the final poll when there’s that many teams. There will be more discussion and more arguing for Bama when it comes down to making a play off or not

Maybe, though that's conjecture and isn't really relevant to your point. The committee "massaging" the rankings just to make sure Bama gets in at 2 losses is quite a bit different than Bama being a lock with 3 losses.

Bomani Jones

concern no. 1: more money on the backs of the unpaid labor. it’s morally indefensible.

I can’t stand Bomani Jones, but he has a point here. A possible 17 game schedule in high level college football is ridiculous to ask of a “student athlete”.

I just disagree that you can just look at past rankings and assume they would fall the same way if the playoffs were like that in a previous year.

The discussion is going to be completely different. When it comes down to it I don’t think a 3 loss Bama team with Saban is going to be sweating very hard about getting in.

The same way the committee pours into these big discussions about the top 4 now, they will be having those conversations about the last 2-4 teams in with the new model. So there’s way more wiggle room to go “you know at the end of the day, this team is simply more talented on paper so they are getting in since it’s close enough to argue”

I mean even with the margins so small, those top elite teams barely slide down after a loss in the rankings so unless they lose their final two games or something, they’ll likely work their way into the top 12 without even trying

I don't think there is any possible way to say this with confidence given the nearly limitless variables and possible outcomes. You're taking a 3 loss Bama in a vacuum and maybe mixing in a little Bama victim syndrome to make such a confident statement.

In 2017, there would have been 0 teams with 3 losses in a 12 team playoff, unless they went ahead of a team with at least one less loss. I promise a 3 loss Bama would be sweating in that scenario.

I’m just using assumptions based on how they’ve done the playoff conversations in the past man, I’m not even complaining about it really I just think that’s a side effect that a lot of people aren’t looking at. I still think they are going to strong arm the G5 schools out of the conversation and keep the top tier teams in with even more slack than they’ve ever had before.

Most of all, I’m just giving an opinion on what I think will happen dude, not a 50 page thesis with statistical analysis

This is so dumb and is the final nail in the coffin for college football.

The playoffs were the start of it and now it’s done.

Everything that made college different and great has been completely watered down. Time to call it the nfl minors

There was no going back after they went to 4.

Having 12 is a vast improvement, both for the sport as a whole, and it’s National appeal

You’re telling me undefeated Alabama and LSU are playing to decide who goes to the SEc Championship and people wouldn’t care because they both will make the playoffs?

That game won’t be exciting?

It would be exciting but it wouldn’t have a do or die feeling. At that point both teams are going to be in the cfp. Either loses its “oh well, let’s get em back in the playoffs”.

Right now we have Alabama fans killing people and trees over regular season losses. It’ll be sad to see that go.

When is the last time a regular season loss stopped Alabama from making the post season?

2013?
