I think back to my time as a little leaguer. My relatively small town had 6 teams in the league. We'd play 1-2 games a week for about 6 weeks with a mid-season weekend tournament and the playoffs at the end of the year. My dad never lost his shite about any of the games. In fact, he was (quietly) very happy if my team went 0-2 in the tournaments because it meant he could avoid sitting in 100 degree heat all weekend and not fricking up the apparent main focus of his weekends, which was cutting the grass.
I wish rec ball around here was like that, with a tournament and playoffs within the rec.
As it is, if you don’t make the all star team you get 6 or 8 games max, which at the 9-10 year old level means 16-20 at bats and 1 or 2 chances to make a play in the field if you’re lucky.
A couple of years of all-stars, paying 3 days of entry fees at FOUR “tune up” tournaments has convinced me that rec baseball has become an excuse for as many towns as possible to host an all-star tournament as a fund-raiser.
And 90% of the kids don’t make all-stars and therefore get almost no real chance to play baseball. Then we wonder why people either play “select” ball or just stay home and play video games.

This is dead on. To further the point of why even those that make allstars leave rec ball:
You have to play with kids on the allstar team that other people decide need to be on it even if they dont coach or have a kid on the allstar team. On the other hand, if you start your own team, you can play with who you want to play.
Some folks use REC ball as a cheap babysitter. Those kids are like 15 minutes early to practice and the parents are 30 minutes late to pick them up. They are hit or miss as to even showing up to the games though.
You have to play in the most god awful facilities so smallville, la can afford to have a league next year or you can play in really nice places within an hour driving distance.
You have to play when they tell you to play on Thursday-Monday tournaments so they can charge 4 gates to the parents versus playing when you want on a saturday and sunday only.
There are several levels of travel ball, each "more elite level" getting crazier and more sterotypical of the "travel ball parents."
I, for one, am looking into my kids playing in the lowest level of travel ball that gets rid of the annoyances of REC ball while avoiding the craziness of "travel ball parents." I really feel like a happy medium exists if you look for it.

It's all about what team you get on honestly. Linking up with like minded parents than can coexist because honestly you're going to be spending a lot of time together. My nephew played on the same team from 8 until 14. They never played more than 9-10 tournaments a year. They won state 4-5 times in those 7 years. They won a couple of those Orange Beach World Series. The top 5 in the lineup all either signed D1 or were drafted out of HS. They didn't recruit/cut players. Through the years, a few dropped off and they added to keep their number at 10.
Like I said, it all comes down to finding the right fit.
ETA: They all played whatever sport was in season: Football, baseball, basketball, soccer, etc. Never played year round.

For USSSA the real World Series is the Elite 32 in Disney. Anything other than that is just a money grab.
Not that the Elite 32 isn't a money grab as well, but you have to legitimately earn a berth to it at least.
Is this the USSSA space coast event in Viera Fl.? Used to be the Demarini elite championship? That was always the true USSSA national champ. Must win a Super NIT to qualify to participate.
Also will say any 12U team that plays in the Thursday night Cooperstown Dreams Park finals is legit. To be the last 2 out of 104 teams for the week says something.

Nothing sounds worse than having a beach/travel ball dual vacation. Who wants to spend their time at the beach in a ballpark?
Hope all of the Dads packed plenty of sunscreen to cover the area on their legs below where the cargo shorts end.
I’m not knocking the OP for umping, it’s the parents who put their kids in this and make it a vacation and travel ball tournament all in one.

For 4 days of umpiring, you make about $900-$1,200. Lodging is a condo with a few other umpires and it’s free
that's why your travel ball entry fees are obscene
Hourly equivalent is about $20/ hr. in the sun, all day, listening to Brayden's mom yell at the coach to appeal the last strike not knowing you can't dispute that.

I swear to god I heard someone at the 3A state championship game asking if they could review the play. If high school family members are that bad, I can’t even imagine these travel ball parents. Unless my kid was in that knights organization, I wouldn’t frick with it.

I’m a longtime umpire of all ages and leagues. It was never about the money, most who umpire have been going to the park their whole lives playing the game. I wanted to continue to go to the park and being a part of the game. Umpires are very overlooked and they contribute greatly to ones enjoyment of our greatest game . Good on you OP

Well this weeks World Series is in the books. Now get to spend the next 3 days relaxing by the pool or on the beach waiting until next weeks World Series to start on Tuesday. For the most part, it really is a good time and great money for a side job.

If one wanted to get into umpiring how would they go about it?
How many years would one have to put in before they’re umpiring World Series?

Join your local association. Go to closest fields near you and talk to league commissioner and let him point you in the right direction. USSSA as well as other associations offer established umpires many opportunities to work regional tournaments . It’s very rewarding if you love the game and have thick skin go for it.

You have to stay in the condo with other umpires?

Go to the website of your local city baseball league. Find contact information for the head of umpires. Email or call that person to let them know you’re interested in umpiring. I recommend doing rec ball for 1 or 2 seasons to see how you like it, see how you do, and like someone else said, you HAVE to have thick skin and be able to not retaliate AT ALL when you get heckled.
IF you still want to umpire after those 1 or 2 seasons, go to the USSSA website and use the event search link to find tournament information and contact information for the person in charge of any tournaments closest to where you live. Let them know you have umpired before and were wondering if you could start umpiring travel ball for them.
Note: there are other travel ball organizations other than USSSA. There is OTC, Grand Slam, Cal Ripken, and others. Just depends where you live.

Yes, each condo has between 4-6 umpires. Each has his own bed. It may sound crowded, but the only time we are all in the condo is to sleep and maybe an hour in the morning to get ready and maybe 2 hours late at night to shower and do laundry before bed. We have yet to have problems with bathroom use or washer/dryer use.

I wish Little Leage was in more towns. We play travelball and I think the “world series” is the stupidest thing ever. The rec leagues around need are awful. Kids don’t have a choice.
