Had this discussion with some colleagues the other day.

Is there a legit way to get a portion of the massive profits of the NCAA into the hands of players via incentive to play their entire 4 years?

Cut of the profits are set aside for the players, and they cash in once they complete the duration of their contract.

Can this be done without opening a can of worms with the non revenue generating sports?

Absolutely not.

This opens a bigger can(as far as what's "fair" for all sports) than letting athletes profit off their name and likeness, imo.

What percentage of athletes do you think leave early to go pro?

There are 347 Division 1 schools, 24 of those athletic departments turned a profit.

Never happen. The NCAA is essentially the mob. There will never be a scenario in which the NCAA allows their subjugates to profit anyone other than themselves. If a player is projected to go anywhere in the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft and plays in any bowl game that isn't a playoff, they're absolute idiots.

In football? That’d be shitty. Especially when you consider the shelf life of an NFL player from a physical aspect.

What happens when a player in their 4th year, playing their the last game, has an career ending injury? Do they still get paid?

It's not just about that.
It was just another way to get some of the money into the hands of the players, but with incentive.

Likely because the football and basketball portions of those ADs are carrying women's sand volleyball and other silliness

Yes.

Same as their scholarship would be honored.

I don't understand all this angst over players leaving early or skipping the bowl game. There are roughly 11,000 FBS scholarship players and so few leave early.

You're trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

The money in college football goes to the conferences and the bowls and then the schools get their cut above and beyond ticket sales.

In hoops the NCAA runs the tournament and negotiates for tv rights

Nope. Brings up Title IX issues. And it won't help the football/MBB issue because there won't be anywhere near enough money to match the pros.

If you want to get more guys to stay, let them take outside money.

It will never happen but the rule(for NFL, NBA & MLB) should be you can enter out of HS or you have to wait until after eligibility/graduation.

Why do these discussions always start with the assumption that this is even necessary?

Because this arrangement benefits both the NCAA and NFL.

They have a very big and very nice stipend that of taken care of properly will/should last them a lifetime. It’s called a scholarship (free education)!!

No more “stipend” should even be remotely considered.

So you think those scholarships awarded to athletes are free? They’re free only to the recipient but to the school that has to be paid for.

Anyone on football or basketball scholarship shouldn’t receive a single penny from the school(‘s). They’re already getting something for free that actual students never receive, debt free/loan free education.
