My favorite tweet from that Twitter thread

Yep, I don't think manh people realize that China is an authoritarian government. They control almost everything over there. It's pretty damn scary.

On Chinese networks yes, you can work around it if your on VPN.

I went over there a few years ago for work. Weird as hell being in a place with basically no Google or Facebook.

WeChat over there is basically the primary way everyone communicates, but there is no privacy.

Basically, when you go over there, don't ask any questions about the government. The Chinese people I worked with were scared as frick anytime I brought it up (me being naive, I didn't think about it when I first went over).

It's very sad, too. The average Chinese citizen wasn't nearly as worried about being reported 10 years ago. Xi Jinping has really ramped up the authoritarian infrastructure and created a horrifying Orwellian environment.

We had a student exchange in the 90's in Beijing...part of it was meeting Chinese students to so-called exchange ideas...and talk to learn about each other's society and culture.

What a waste of time. The government didn't give us Tiananmen Square students - which we knew would happen...

But just Pro-Communist system, China is the best, Western World sucks, let me explain to you everything wrong with Capitalism. It was sad to see students forced to act like robots for propaganda...who knew our students at Universities would become like that in 2010s.
