I think the bounty program is completely overstated. Goodelll is acting as if the Saints were dirty over the last few years. Rarely do you see after the play shots by the Saints. Who was hurt during this bounty hunt? I mean, yea take picks away or whatever but to suspend Sean Payton for an entire season for this crap is ridiculous.

Even if the hit was completely legal, should a player get a bonus for knocking someone out of a game? That's what the issue is here. Not were the hits legal/illegal, but should an organization reward injuries.

What if the defender just made his opponent mentally quit? We've seen it many times, particularly with receivers who are afraid to catch the ball across the middle of the field. Is that wrong too? Because if it is, then we're heading towards a flag football league.

A few thoughts:

1. Given that the Saints were told to end the bounty program and then continued it and lied about, the punishment seems reasonable. Severe for sure, but reasonable.

2. I also think the punishment has little to do with the bounty program and is severe because the Saints got caught lying about it.

3. I also think this highlights the fact that Goodell is ultimately one of the biggest hypocrites around. The fact that he has not mandated that all NFL players wear the news safer helmets and the fact that every week we see players without wearing thigh pads or knee pads makes me really wonder how big a priority player safety really is (as opposed to the illusion that it is important).

4. I think Goodell is ultimately hurting the league with all his talk about changing the culture of football. While it may be a little distasteful, very non-PC, and we may not want to admit it about ourselves, the violent culture is what made the NFL the billion dollar industry that it is. I think Goodell is swinging the pendulum so far the other way that at some point there will be fan backlash. If he really hates the NFL culture so much, he is free to go run a soccer league.

If Goodell wanted to make an example out of the Saints for lying that is fine.

Acting like this is an issue of safety is just fricking ridiculous. As long as they are not just making blatantly illegal hits the safety talk is just stupid.

Crazy the Saints got burned so bad for breaking a rule that had no actual affect of play on the field and didn't give them a competitive advantage.

Wow a guy who is a fan of a team with the biggest offensive and defensive cheap shot artists in the league playing the paralyzation card. When have the saints even come remotely close to "paralyzing" anyone during this entire period?

The penalties were really only contingent upon the lying.

There was nothing competitively gained by all this. No reason to take draft picks. If anything they took too many draft picks as no actual cheating took place. Hilarious that people are mistaking the hits on a geriatric Favre and a 110% legal hit on Warner as "cheating" when it was that exact type of play that has immortalized guys like LT, Butkis, the steal curtain, etc.

If they didnt lie I would expect 3-4 games at most and no draft picks.

Agreed, it's hypocritical bullshite at its finest and that's what bothers me.

A guy campaigning for an 18-game season is lecturing anybody about the concerns for player safety? Give me a motherfricking break. That is an absolute joke and the pompous arse should be ashamed of his self for even suggesting it as an explanation for this over-reaction of a punishment.

Right, because that's remotely close to what was going on here.

Goodell is taking the easy route and making an example out of the saints when numerous guys have come out and said similar programs went on in there lockerroom. Why no investigation Rodger? The situation was perfect for him, he could show how stern he is on player safety and punch a small market team in the stomach who couldn't put up much of a fight.

Bill B got off easy because Goodell wasn't about to piss Kraft off.

as for your "omg I put non saints fans in the title" go frick yourself, this is a site largely dominated by saints fans did you think they wouldn't put their 2 cents in?

Listening to the radio today they said the investigation covered 13 teams.
