NFL head of officials Al Riveron said he has told referees not to use folded note cards on first-down measurements, as happened Sunday night in Cowboys-Raiders game.

What if they don't fold them?

why would you use an unfolded note card?

it's like using single ply TP

They should put one player on each team on the end of the sticks and tell them to pull on it and after five seconds, see if the ball is beyond the sticks or not.

A co-worker & Raiders fan claims that paper was Jerry Jones Check for the Officials.

How the frick did they think that was supposed to work? Unless they were using an L square, theres no way to guarantee the ref wasn't angling that paper in his measurement

A first-down ruling despite visible space between the football and first-down marker.

And then, there was that muffled grin from referee Gene Steratore as he stepped away from his paper trail.

And people think Raiders fans are paranoid.

So the ball's short...but with folded index card 1st down! On the game winning drive.

Why in the hell were they using that to begin with?

Because they couldn’t eyeball it. If the paper slides and doesn’t touch the ball, no first down. If the paper touches the ball, first down.

It amazes me how many people were and still are griping about this and had no clue what he was doing with the card in the first place. We are in a sad place in our society.

Paper hit the tip of the ball on the way down. First down. Rigged they coulda easily spotted the ball a foot or two ahead of where they did if they wanted to rig it. No doubt about it the linesman knew where that marker was if he wanted a first down he coulda spotted the ball safely ahead of it.

They should computerize or out laser lights coming out to see if the ball touches the light. How difficult can these decisions honestly be? How does goodell make 900k a week?
