Ewers is expected to join the Ohio State program for summer training camp at some point in August. He is completing his coursework to graduate, which he has already begun taking online. Some ambiguity remains about precisely when he’ll be able to start practicing, as officially joining by the start of camp on Tuesday will be highly unlikely as he navigates the bureaucracy inherent to collegiate admissions and NCAA clearance. The expectation remains he’ll be able to get eligible at some point during camp.

Ewers has emerged as such a precocious and recognizable star that he has the potential to earn nearly a million dollars in the next year by profiting off his Name Image and Likeness. A local company called Holy Kombucha is among those offering a deal to Ewers, and it includes cash and equity in the company. There are several other offers, including national brands.

While this avenue of making money off NIL has become formally available to college athletes in the past month, it’s not allowed for high school athletes in Texas. The state’s University Interscholastic League informed the Ewers family in an email Monday that any attempt for Ewers to profit off his NIL would be in violation of Texas’ recent legislation regarding Name Image and Likeness.

Ewers and his family are facing an imminent decision of whether to play his senior year without the deals or enroll at Ohio State a year early and cash in on endorsements. Ewers is expected to decide this week.

“I don’t really know, I don’t have a final decision made quite yet,” Ewers said in a phone interview on Wednesday. “I’m leaning toward leaving and going up to Ohio, just so I don’t have to deal with UIL stuff and can get comfortable with Ohio and Columbus and start to learn.”

This kind of thing will be common for a few years but after enough recruits don't pan out, these companies will stop throwing money at unproven players.

Thinking back on so many players over the years who were 5 star superstar recruits out of high school that flamed out in college. How many of those guys would have been millionaires instead of resigned to a life of car dealership work.

When Saban said Bryce Young was close to getting $1mil in NIL deals before taking a legitimate snap in a game, you knew this was coming.

We thought Todd Marinovich crashed and burned hard; this is going to be a shite show.

Yep. Tate Martell would have made millions, and still flopped.

If Tathan Martell was in high school now, he might have been able to score a sweet endorsement deal with Nathan's hot dogs.

Uhhh what? the salary cap was implemented whenever the NFL first created NFL free agency as a way to equalize the ability for all teams to compete in a free agent market and as a compromise with the players in order to agree to a free agent solution. It wasn’t a reaction to getting “burned”. It came after years of player litigation for the ability to be free agents and have the ability to raise their salaries with competitive markets after their original draft contracts are up or are cut.

Sounds like the kid can graduate HS early and earn money for the skills he crafted his entire childhood. Why would he cut grass?

Holy crap would he have cashed in. He started as a freshman back when NOBODY started as a freshman. And he was in L.A. at USC no less.
