due to refusing to get the vax

quote:

Former Washington State football coach Nick Rolovich, fired last year because he refused the COVID-19 vaccine, has filed a claim against the university seeking $25 million for wrongful termination.

Rolovich was denied a religious exemption from Gov. Jay Inslee’s mandate requiring state employees to get the vaccine.

The university fired Rolovich “for cause” in October 2021 after he had coached just 11 games with the Cougars.

Rolovich’s attorney, Brian Fahling of Kenmore, indicated at the time that Rolovich would take legal action, claiming religious discrimination. Rolovich is Catholic.

The Catholic Church approves receiving the vaccine. Am I missing something? Can an individual make up their own religious exemption?

The Catholic Church’s embrace of coronavirus vaccines is consistent with past practice

A parishioner has the right to choose. My wife had a coworker that went to same Catholic Church as us and she got a religious exemption at their place of work who mandated it.

The Catholic Church’s official position has absolutely jack shite to do with the man’s personal relationship with God and his own interpretation of scripture.

I hope he gets every penny and $100M in punitive damages.

Yeah basically all I see are emotional reactions not legal arguments. So I googled around and found this article exploring the issues:

Balancing Religious Freedoms and Public Health Protections During the COVID-19 Pandemic

quote:

Numerous Supreme Court cases historically affirm that First Amendment rights to assemble and exercise one’s religious beliefs are not absolute. These rights may be temporarily restricted during declared emergencies. Content-neutral public health laws that do not unjustifiably target specific religious groups or locales, and leave alternative channels open for communication, are constitutionally sound. Even in non-emergencies, freedom of religious expression does not include rights to engage in harmful behaviors, such as unwittingly spreading COVID-19 across congregations and communities.

The lawsuit may not be a slam dunk in either direction, but how it goes may depend on the judge who gets the case.

And those pushing the vaccines have admitted they do not prevent you from getting the Kung Flu.

So not taking it makes no difference as far as spreading it to others.

Fair point. It will be an interesting case.

Catholic Church says it is the individual's decision, Catholics have received religious exemptions.

SCOTUS struck down the vaccine mandate for nonhealthcare workers. Last time I checked a football coach was not a healthcare worker so WSU's "for cause" termination was an unconstitutional cause for termination. The dude deserves to be paid.

I only wish that governor had to contribute to the $25 million if Rolovich wins

that only applied to OSHA regulations, not state regulations, but his 1st amendment rights still apply
