Referee Tim Peel will not work another game in the NHL after getting caught saying he wanted to give the Nashville Predators a penalty in their win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.

NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell made the announcement Wednesday morning, saying that Peel would "no longer be working NHL games now or in the future."

With 15:04 left in the second period, Predators forward Viktor Arvidsson was called for tripping Red Wings defenseman Jon Merrill in the offensive zone, even though replays showed that Merrill embellished his fall to help draw the call. Peel made the penalty call from around center ice.

With 12:42 remaining in the second period, the Nashville broadcast captured audio from Peel saying "it wasn't much, but I wanted to get a f---ing penalty against Nashville early."

Game fixing in all sports has been an issue forever. This just makes you wonder how often things like this actually happen. Lots of posters have been suggesting that the NFL is rigged for a few years now. Makes you wonder.

And, yes, I realize that this particular call didn’t influence the outcome of the game.

Good. Tim Peel has been an embarrassment for a long time.

I don’t follow hockey but is this really a bit deal? Is it just that it was caught on a mic? How is it different than when refs call a few fouls early on teams to prevent worsening behavior or to keep the game in check, even though they may not normally make those calls?

Was the game chippy and in need of a quick whistle? "I wanted to get a fricking penalty against Nashville early" is a somewhat awkward sentence even in the context of rigging a game. This almost sounds like he took something personally and tried to stick it to Nashville.

It's all optics. Peel was retiring anyway.

When you premeditate that you’re going to make a call on a team and then verbalize it, it’s a pretty big deal.

how long had he been a referee?

i don't think this was a fireable offense. it had little effect on the game and just looked bad, but it really wasn't.

maybe talk to him after the game but this just embarrassed him.

He was retiring soon anyway. Been a ref since like 1990.

A long time. He's done over 1,000 NHL games and was set to retire on April 24th.

Edit- ESPN article says 1,300 games before the beginning this year and he'd been a NFL referees since 1999.

Did you see the LSU basketball game the other night?

People will say our shooting % was low and they had 11 more rebounds... And I say I saw 10 drives to the basket that should have been a foul leading to a missed shot and a rebound when it should have been 2 free throws.

Way too much money at stake in professional sports for the outcomes to be left entirely to the players and chance.

The NFL isn't rigged as in it's scripted or with predetermined outcomes but refs are certainly told how to call games

It's absolutely a big deal. They're "managing" the games. Glad to see this POS out of the league even though he was set to retire soon anyway. But the NHL will continue on and this will be all that comes of it.

Here's another gem from him:

Duchene talks about it today:

Isn't there a old conspiracy theory that NBA is rigged/fixed?

So what do you think was the cause of this?

Fixing the game for betting sake?

It was early in the game so perhaps not one of those familiar makeup calls. Maybe the ref has it in for the team?

Nashville was favored. Was he trying to level out the playing field for a more exciting game?

I think he just had a personal vendetta against Nashville for whatever reason.

Very often across all sports. They just made an example of him but NHL is not better than the NFL. Don't be naive.

Refs aren't told to call games for certain teams but to keep games close because its just entertainment like WWE.

David Stern was the Godfather of this when the NBA was tanking in the ratings.

Lets make every NBA Finals go 6 or 7 games.

NFL didn't get the memo as Super Bowls were blowouts while the NBA also-ran exploded in popularity...no face masks, marketed the stars and tried to keep games close.
