The NFL owners will vote on a rule that would greatly expand the prohibition on blocking below the waist, making such blocks illegal by offensive and defensive players if contact occurs beyond five yards on either side of the line of scrimmage and more than two yards outside of either offensive tackle.

All such illegal blocks would carry a 15-yard penalty.

This might result in more flags being thrown, but it also might result in fewer lower body injuries, as players often complain that when their opponents block them low, it risks serious knee injuries. When the Competition Committee proposes a rule for player safety, the NFL owners rarely vote it down, so this rule has a good chance of passing.

No more cut blocks outside. Score one for the defense but early in the season it could be ugly with extra flags. Also could see weird penalties where a QB is scrambling and a back or lineman cuts a defender more than 5 yds behind the line of scrimmage.

Would really prefer fewer flags.

These players are becoming so valuable that the actual violent nature of football is becoming too dangerous to those earnings.

On one hand I do like that this gives somewhat of an advantage to the defense. On the other hand I hate more penalties regardless. I’m so conflicted

How about you just let DBs have the old 5 yard jam rule back and let the LBs bump people underneath? If you did that the quality of the product would sky rocket.

This one is actually legit, but I agree with the sentiment.

This is an easy one to just stop doing.

No one is paying to watch elite pass rushers on crutches.

I'm actually ok w/this.

BBTW are a safety issue. PERIOD! That's how guys knees get shredded like cheese.

As an official, safety fouls should always take priority.

It could get fricked up though when mahomes scrambles around and makes an amazing throw only to have it come back because a lineman block below the waist more than 5 yd behind the line of scrimmage or outside the tackles.

Just allow clotheslines again

You come across the middle within 5 yards you get the stone cold Steve Austin

I don't think this affects normal cut blocking on the back side.

I may be ignorant here, but I don't think I've ever seen someone get their knees shredded by a cut block where a flag in this scenario would be thrown.

If there is one thing that can make the NFL better, it is more penalties.

How about just penalizing all cut blocks so everyone knows you just can’t do it no matter the area of the field. Diving at someone’s feet to make a block is silly when you think about it.

Why is it silly? It protects offensive linemen on the backside from the bull rush and slows down defenders.

If you’re paid millions to block and you are one of the best in the world at it, use your athleticism and skills to execute a block while staying on your feet. Jumping at someone’s feet is a cheap move that isn’t worth the increased injury risk.

So show me all the injuries due to cut blocks that aren't currently illegal, or made to be illegal due to this change in rules. If it's so dangerous, you'd think people would constantly be injured because of it. The overwhelming majority of knee injuries occur either contactless, or open field helmet/shoulder pad to knee hits where both sides build up momentum. There is no momentum built up in a cut block how most teams and offensive line do them.

For christ sakes, offensive linemen are taught to "punch" on pass rushes, literally grab the inside chest pads to control blocks, and regularly push people over on borderline blindside blocks. Why don't any of those hurt your sensibilities? It's part of the game.

Anything below the waist is always a safety issue due to the risk of injury to the knees, ankles, etc. Clips are especially dangerous.
