So Maclin gets injured on an incomplete pass. Why were the Ravens forced to use a timeout when the clock was stopped anyway?

Inside two minutes you have to use a TO for injuries

The rule is in place so teams don't fake injuries in order to stop the clock.

Even when the clock is stopped? That makes zero sense.

I understand that but when the clock is stopped I've never seen that result in an automatic timeout.

If he needs on the field medical attention, it's a stoppage of play outside of the 40 second playclock.

An incomplete pass doesn’t stop the play clock. The game clock stops, but not the play clock.

Is the rule the same in college? I watch way more college and can't ever remember seeing that. If that is the actual rule good lord NFL, get your shite together.

Teams don't fake injuries to save time on the play clock.

I brought this up in the game thread. By rule the Ravens shouldn’t have lost that last timeout since the clock was already stopped. Just another case of shite officiating.

Right? This is what I was thinking. If that is the rule it's so retarded it pisses me off.

If the refs dicked it up and nobody, the announcers or the Ravens entire team/staff noticed, that pisses me off too. Unacceptable.

That’s what I said. It’s shite officiating but it’s even shittier coaching not to know that and explain the rule to the ref with your season on the line.

There was an illegal shift penalty, which is treated as a false start in the last minute of a half. The incomplete pass never happened. Due to the "false start", the offense either gets a 10 second runoff or uses a timeout.

No it doesn't, that only applies if the clock is already running and the Steelers declined the penalty anyway.

Nope, it was the first play of the drive so the clock was stopped before the play, PLUS the penalty was declined. There’s only a 10 second runoff if the injury is the only reason the game clock stopped OR an accepted false start/illegal motion penalty WHILE THE CLOCK IS MOVING. Not yelling just emphasizing the pertinent parts of the rule.

Yeah no shite

After an incompletion the game clock stops. Play clock is running. Meaning you have 40 seconds to run a play or get a delay of game penalty. An injury where the medical staff has to come on the field to look at the player takes way longer than 40 seconds.

Therefore, that team would have a longer break and more time to find the right play, talk to the coach, get right personnel on the field, etc. without having to spend a TO and without getting a delay of game penalty. Meaning they would benefit from having an injured player on the field, which is why they are forced to use a TO regardless if it was a run, completed pass, or an incompleted pass.
