NFL Hall Of Famer Brian Urlacher Accuses Ex-Players of Faking CTE to Sue the League

NFL legend Brian Urlacher suspects some players fake having CTE as a means of gaining attention and potentially lining their pockets.
quote:
Speaking with fellow NFL player Will Compton for the June 29th edition of the podcast Bussin’ With The Boys, the two discussed the brain condition and its effects on players.
quote:
“I feel like I’m decently sharp still. You know, there’s some things I forget, but my friends forget shite too,” Urlacher said. “I feel like I’m still doing pretty well. There are some guys I played with who claimed — I don’t know, here’s the problem now with all the guys with the CTE, if they do have it, I feel for them, but there’s guys who say they have it just so they can be in the fricking lawsuit,” Urlacher replied.
quote:
“They want that money from the NFL and I get it, man. You know, everyone wants to get there due, but there’s really guys that have it, that deserve to be taken care of. And there’s the guys that don’t have it who want to be — who want to have it just so they can get part of that lawsuit and that just drives me crazy,” he concluded.

I thought you couldn’t tell that you have/had CTE until you die and they examine your brain?

I mean, that’s not an especially scorching take on a broad class action lawsuit against a multi-billion dollar entity for a disease that can be proven until you’re dead.
He didn’t say CTE isn’t real or people don’t have it, just that some are hopping on what they hop is a gravy train.

I’m sure there are a few trying to game the system like everything else.

How can anyone know if they have it unless they're dead and they take apart your brain?

Weren't there a few kickers and punters who signed up for the concussion suits?

That's right, there's no way to diagnose it in the living. In postmortem analyses the risk of CTE has shown to be correlated with the length of time playing football, which implies that the amount of total head trauma is big factor.
Urlacher sounds to me like somebody who doesn't want to face the potential unfortunate consequences of playing linebacker/safety for 20+ years.

My friends that played college football have been done for 10-15 years. Several of them seem to have truly gotten dumber, but nobody has done anything really crazy except one guy who joined the military, but he was always very crazy.
CTE is a degenerative disease so I imagine it hits some people differently and at different times. I used to think it was mostly bullshite but the older I get the more I think it is prevalent in many former players.

Was one the punter that Sean Taylor destroyed at the Pro Bowl? He may have a legit claim

He's probably right but it's a shitty accusation to make publicly because you can't prove it until after death.

Sounds like something somebody with CTE would say

Which would hardly be a first.
A number of former players are in jail for defrauding the league’s health plan.

This is an objectively stupid position to take by Urlacher. As others have mentioned, no one alive has the ability to know if they even have CTE or not, thus making it truly impossible for anyone to “fake having CTE”.
But, this board has never cared about semantics like facts and logic. People just want to keep seeing football the way they grew up with it being played. This helps that narrative, so the board will applaud him.

I have a question on if CTE was ever studied in people who did NOT play contact sports, military service, history of concussions, etc. Seems in all the things I have read over the years the scientists pop open the skull of a deceased former player, study the brain, and say "yep, CTE". Never once seen the study of control patients, average Joe's who didn't play sports who had their heads popped open post mortem to study their brains to see what they have.
I'd be curious. Is CTE prevalent in all elderly humans?

I believe CTE has been extensively studied in military folks

These health issues have long been a part of the collective bargaining agreement and also part of a settlement of a lawsuit regarding brain injuries.
So, this has always been more than just filling out a medical inquiry. Due to the nature of a violent, contact sport, these guys are having serious medical issues, even beyond CTE, later in life.
It's still just sad when I see one of my heroes growing up watching the Oilers. Earl Campbell for years now can barely walk a few steps without getting in his wheelchair.
These guys deserve all the medical benefits they can get.

It's why I mentioned military service. I know it's been studied, the effects of concussions from bombs, etc.
Just wondering if the doctors have studied an average human brain of some guy who never played contact sports, military service, and worked a 9 to 5 desk job.

quote:
First, there is no “lawsuit.” No one is suing the league at this point. The class action was settled, years ago. The settlement makes all players who retired before final certification of the class eligible for potential benefits.
Second, there’s no way anyone can prove that they have CTE while they are still alive. It’s a condition that can be diagnosed only after a person dies. So if a guy says, as Urlacher claims, that he has CTE, the compensation will come only after he dies — and after an analysis of his brain confirms it.
Third, the settlement has created a specific process for assessing a range of real cognitive problems for which compensation is available. If impairment can be proven, the player gets compensation based on the type of condition, along with a specific formula that takes the length of the career into account.
By Mike Florio but still relevant
TL:DR - Brian Urlacher is a moron, surprise.
