Zion Williamson has been hailed as the next big thing in the NBA, but his colleagues in the incoming rookie class aren't sold on the idea that the No. 1 overall pick will have a great NBA career.

quote:

In the league's annual survey of rookies, players were asked which member of the 2019 class would have the best career. Williamson received only 5% of the votes.

Cam Reddish, Williamson's teammate at Duke, garnered 19% of the votes. Reddish went to the Atlanta Hawks with the 10th pick of the draft.
Reddish was followed by Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies with 16% of the votes and De'Andre Hunter of the Hawks with 11%.

quote:

Williamson was picked to win Rookie of the Year by his colleagues, earning 35% of the votes to edge Morant, who received 27%. In the 10 years of the survey, the rookies have tabbed the eventual Rookie of the Year only once. That came in 2007, when they correctly named Kevin Durant.

Reason #46282617 why athletes can’t be taken seriously when ranking or discussing other athletes.

That seems like a bunch of guys who think nobody can be successful in New Orleans. And I think with the current front office, there is a real chance to disprove that.

My choice for a hot take in the NBA was that Zion wouldn't have the best career of this draft class.

That said, even having said this, I think this is just jealousy among players. I took that as my pick because I think Zion is the odds on favorite to be the best from this draft class.

The players must not have watched Cam Reddish at Duke last year either.

How many rookies are there? 50? So each vote is 2 percent. Basically the handful of few guys who didn't vote for themselves decided this.

This. I remember Simmons was way behind Ingram and Kris Dunn that year.

I would say:

Garland
Barrett's
Morant

all will have the ball in their hands the most. Therefore higher #s per game.

Reddish was absolutely terrible last year. He is a "shooting specialist" who shot 35 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3. I have no idea how anyone can look at Reddish and think he will have the best career.

Barrett and Zion are probably still waking up with back pain from how much they had to carry him last year.

I watched Reddish all year, am a Duke grad and can’t think of a single plus category for Reddish.

Average shooter, average length, average explosion and average awareness.

If he had come in as a 4* I don’t think anyone would’ve taken him in the 1st round.

Wish the dude well, maybe K just didn’t maximize his game in Durham?

I think it’s more of them jealous of all of the attention axiom has got since he stepped on the floor at Duke. On top of them being his peers, they probably feel slighted by the coverage he gets vs them (example: draft lottery).

I think it’s a bunch of guys that felt bad that Cam didn’t live up to the hype at Duke and dropped a bit in the draft. If they honestly think Cam Reddish will have the best career in the NBA, I’m not sure what that says about how they feel about the rest of the rookies.

ETA: If the rookies were serious when doing this poll (which I’m not convinced they were), I actually understand if they don’t think Zion is going to be the ROY, because he’s not going to be asked to be the best player on his team. Morant and Barrett will have much larger roles on their respective teams, but it’s kinda funny that these rookies think they are so much smarter than NBA GMs and they think that Cam will be the best player from this class. Not even saying that Zion is 100% the “right” answer, but Zion, Morant, Barrett, Garland, and Culver should all be ahead of Cam.
