I was a long time NASCAR fan from my teens to my mid 30s. I stopped watching and caring about 5-6 years ago and it happened over a period of years. Here is what pushed me away...

1. Constant rule changes. Every year they added a rule, or took away a feature of traditional racing. A perfect example is the “Luck Dog” when a caution came out. Traditionally, the field was not set until each car passed the S/F Line. Meaning if 2 drivers were battle for position it would be determined at the S/F line, not some arbatrary location or time decided by NASCAR. It also gave drivers the chances to pass the leader before the line to get a lap back.

2. Cautions seem to come out for no reason or minor stuff and always at key moments when a particular driver needed it. Seemed very WWEish.

3. U.S. Expansion. When they started expand By to Vega, California, etc they left their roots. Traditional races were removed to expand west.

4. Daytona 500, 2011. That year I went to my first 500 and that was the year that you had to drive 2x2 to have speed. There was not drafting and sling shot because once you left your lead car, both cars faded. Only half the field had a chance to win because the push car had zero chance. It was boring as hell.

5. Marketing to casual fans. All Sports tick me off with this. They became more concerned about how causal fans felt about their sports they left the longtime Die Hards out in the cold. This marketing lead to more and more rules changes and what eventually put the final nail in the coffin for me...

6. The Chase....casual fans and media complained about how NASCAR has historically crowned their champion, so NASAR came up with “The Chase” it seems EVERY year NASCAR changes the requirements for entry and the format. At first it was Top 10, then they added 2 wild cards, then the special rule for Kyle Busch, now I think 20 drivers get in. I really don’t know because I don’t care any more.

Many good points made about vanilla drivers, cookie cutter tracks, aero issues, etc.

But there is always turnover in drivers, and the racing is pretty competitive,

A big problem is that younger folks aren’t as interested in motor sports. The rate at which they even get a driver license has fallen way off, and they put it off to an older age. They can’t really work on an old piece of shite car in the back yard like we did; too much computer crap on them to allow a kid to shade tree it.

The crazy popularity of the 2000s couldn’t last, and the lack of interest by young folks hit at about the time the general craze waned.

They need shorter races and a shorter season to start adjusting to the new reality.

salient points.

I'll be honest, I've been able to recapture some of what made NASCAR great just going to local tracks and following stock car races there. Way more entertaining and cheaper.

You're talking about 10 years ago, not the 1950's.

Like F1, NASCAR needs to reinvent itself. Look at what Liberty Media is doing to F1. And they inherited a shitbag.

NASCAR is a boring product to begin with, and they celebrate their redneck roots which won't bring 80% of the country in.

This was 3 years ago but I had several friends in college from central/South America and they ate that shite up. All 21-23 at the time

It seems America is one of the few countries that the petrolheads don't have a outright love for F1

NHRA rarely sells out and I shudder to think what their ratings are

I agree with this. I used to be a NHRA fan when I was young but even then I only knew one other person that watched and kept up with it? Where do they get the money from if no one is watching the product?

I will still be at the Richmond Spring race with my kids! Cheaper tickets without all the bandwagon fans!

There is no street circuit in the world with a corner as iconic as Eau Rouge, 130R or The Parabolica.

(I grant your point otherwise, though )

The Chase is what ruined NASCAR for me. It's WWE style horseshite.

It wouldn't even be that bad if NASCAR had a separate prize / money award for the driver who won the actual championship -- i.e. most points over the course of a season.

I agree with anyone talking about the youth not being interested. Hell I'm not that old but I used to care a little about NASCAR until I got to college. Racing just doesn't have a market for younger generations, which is the same for many sports, especially football now too.

People who complain about the Chase annoy me. The previous championship system generated basically zero interest the last month of the season.

The exciting part is there is a group of really good young drivers I am hoping can bring back interest. This year was the most engaged I have been in a few years.

As a huge fan I can see the writing on the wall.

I posted the other day, Nascar is dying and I'll be the one to watch it until I can't. Oh well

I'm going to the Daytona 500 for a bachelor party. A pretty good idea if you ask me, and will be a complete shitshow.

But this is impossible, they all stand for the national anthem.

So naturally in 3 years NASCAR's going to be the most popular sport in North America.

Go to Dega for a shite show

Daytona race is big but it's nothing you should waste a bachelor party on. The beach sucks too
