Someone told me NASCAR was the #3 sport in the US.

Finally we have some viewership stats to back it up.

It's no coincidence that Danica Patrick announces she is retiring and the whole sport is going down the tubes!

NASCAR's current decline started pretty much when she entered the sport, ....soooo maybe it was her fault?

The real decline in NASCAR and even Open Wheel racing started when they banned those sweet sweet Tobacco dollars from the sports in the early 2000s. Motorsport has yet to find such a willing and able massive industry to consistently pump money into it like they did back then.

They could stop going to some of their tracks 2 times a year and actually start going to tracks in areas they have fans.

If Indy Car can go to Gateway race track, and pack it in, and show their product off, then Nascar should also be doing it.

Or moar road courses. A NASCAR race at Road Atlanta might actually be pretty cool.

F1 has been doing the same stupid thing. There's a Grand Prix in freaking Azerbaijan now. The idea is to expose it to new fans and build the fanbase. Fine, but meanwhile they've ignored their core fans. There has been no French GP for a while now (but there's one on the calendar for 2018) and the German GP has been every other year.

The new Roval at Charlotte actually looks interesting.

I think Nascar has a number of problems.

Car brands aren't important anymore since all of the cars are identical

The races are too long.

Too many races per year.

Too many 1.5 mile tracks.

The aero of the cars is making it increasingly difficult to pass. That was the major draw as a race fan, the close racing that F1 and IndyCar couldn't replicate.

NASCAR was doomed to drop after the initial wave of popular drivers started retiring. It got a huge bump in the 90s but I can't even tell you who's driving these days

This. IMO, their fatal mistake was around the time R.J. Reynolds dropped their sponsorship - that's when they starting watering down the interesting personalities in the sport in exchange for more sponsor-friendly drivers. They tried to undo it (much like the NFL is doing now by easing the excessive celebration rules), but it seems like it came too late. Dale Jr., Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart all retiring in recent years is going to kill them going forward.

Yep, that's a problem across the board in almost all forms of racing. For example, when the FIA changed the chassis formula for this year, instead of choosing to improve the racing, they just decided to try to make the cars go faster. MOAR AERO! So the parade around the track just goes faster now.

Their expansion outside the south, and not cultivating southern drivers killed their product.

Corporate, safe, similar.

Good point. Now even the traveling circus of merchandise trailers, that were very popular with fans & the 'at track' experience, has been turned vanilla, after Fanatics bought the rights and monopolized the industry.

Also, pre-HDtv and Internet Streaming, ESPN was the 'be all end all' of anything sports distribution & marketing related, & NASCAR having ESPN/ABC contracts no doubt helped with the mainstream explosion back then.
Now if ESPN doesn't broadcast a sport its basically dead to them, and the casual sportscenter viewer, (which is also dying a slow death)

To Indycar's credit, they seem to be focusing on this with their new aero kits supposedly. Their racing has been the most consistently interesting over the last few years, and their 'at track' experience is second to none. Allowing fans tons of garage access for a reasonable price, I had more fun @ my first Indycar race this past year than I've had at any Nascar race ever.

I'm really hopeful now that Liberty owns the sport. They seem to be more concerned with the fans than Bernie was. Hopefully Ross Brawn can create new regs that allow drivers to actually race.

I was thinking the other day that the majority of the excitement in F1 this year was due to Hamilton and/or Vettel having to make their way through the field. That's not what the sport was built on. They used to be able to pass at Monaco. Now there probably aren't any on track passes at about half of the races.

I agree with your earlier point as well. Race in France again. Have two races in Italy (Monza, Imola, or Mugello) Have two races in the UK at Silverstone and Brands Hatch. Stop trying to "grow" the sport in places that don't want it.

I like IndyCar a lot. The racing is good, the drivers mostly seem like quality dudes, there's a lot of parity. Personally I'd prefer more road tracks and fewer ovals but I get that ovals are where IndyCar came from.

Regarding aero, I'm hopeful that Ross Brawn will be able to find a similar solution for F1. I think if anybody can do it, he can. His stated goal is not necessarily to reduce the amount of downforce but to do it in a way that minimizes the wash for the cars behind. I don't know if that's possible but it's a good goal.

This was the best F1 season in several years. What I liked was that for the first time in a while, there were two constructors actually fighting on track. And 3 at times. I completely agree with you about Monaco. That race has become nothing but a very fast single file parade. It wouldn't bother me to 86 it from the calendar altogether but it's a sacred cow and you don't even talk about losing that race.

Absolutely. And now you see the "new" wearing off some of the races and getting dropped, like Malaysia for example. The same thing is going to happen in Baku and Sochi in a few years.

Oh, and while I'm bitching, why are they so intent on having street courses? I guess it's money as always. But I hate watching races on narrow, bumpy street tracks with a dozen 90° corners. There is no street circuit in the world with a corner as iconic as Eau Rouge, 130R or The Parabolica.

Motorsports viewership all around has declined in the US. NHRA rarely sells out and I shudder to think what their ratings are. I think there are several factors, but a big one IMO is there isn't much of a car culture in America like there use to be. Cars are cookie cutter from all manufacturers, and stupid expensive and difficul to modify for your average teen so they gravitate to other things. Showing my age here, but 25-30 years ago in my HS days, everyone went cruising every Fri, Sat, and Sun. Guys loved showing off their cars and what had been done to them. I couldn't tell you when the last time I saw kids cruising around here.

I agree with you but I do enjoy the Macau Grand Prix wreck fest every year. This year was particularly hilarious.

That reminds me of the IMSA race at Long Beach this year.
