NASCAR sucks, so ratings are getting worse.
The SEC horrid this year so ratings for their games are down.
The NFL is an abysmal product so rating keep decreasing.

I think ESPN over-saturated us the last 20 years.

This is because Chase Elliot hasn't won yet. Can't promote your best driver when he's always 2nd best.

Am I the only one who NEVER watches NASCAR but can(or could within the last 5 years) name 80% of the field off the top of my head?

They must be gods at marketing that sport.

I love most forms of racing (but I'm not a NASCAR fan) and the sport as a whole seems to be on a downturn. It's just too expensive for the teams at nearly every level.

There are exceptions. For instance, MotoGP seems to be doing OK. It's a lot less expensive to run a couple of motorcycles than a cutting edge race car. And also the races themselves are fun to watch so the fan support is there.

I wonder how many people in this thread get this.

bullshite. Its the fastest growing sport among 33-35yo's who live south of I-20 and east of I-55 and have had one or more divorces and currently live with their parents.

Should be replaced with a real sport featuring actual athletes such as rock climbing or mountain biking

Nice.

And is it dying, or just regressing back to the mean, so to speak. It got CRAZY popular for a while, but I always wondered why, and if that was sustainable in the long run.

but what is the reason for this?
It's no coincidence that Danica Patrick announces she is retiring and the whole sport is going down the tubes!

NASCAR was doomed to drop after the initial wave of popular drivers started retiring. It got a huge bump in the 90s but I can't even tell you who's driving these days

Because everything became generic and the same thing to appeal to the masses.

That was my jab at ESPN in marketing and the sport with Turkey...everything in sport had to be Turkey.

Corporate, safe, similar.

No personality. I would maybe watch Nascar if they were their own unique wild thing...but NFL, NASCAR and even CFB now...it's just repackaged turkey. Nothing has different flavor. ESPN gave us one safe product in different uniforms. Streamlined the biz.

The slide started when they dropped Winston Cup and cigarette/tobacco advertising. Alienated a lot of old time fans, which influenced younger fans.

Plus, you lost a lot of real names/legends/characters at the same time they went to restrictor plate racing. Sport got boring and it has taken on a WWE quality.
