NASCAR - 2019 Daytona 500
Posted on 2/5/19 at 7:17 am
Posted on 2/5/19 at 7:17 am
Summary of the offseason:
Gone
Kasey Kahne (retired)
Trevor Bayne
AJ 'dinger
Jamie McMurray (retiring after Daytona for a Fox Sports analyst position, running the 500 in the 40 Spire/CGR car)
78 - Furniture Row
Changes
1 - Kurt Busch
6 - Ryan Newman
8 - Daniel Hemric (switched car number from 31)
19 - Martin Truex Jr
32 - Corey Lajoie
36 - Matt Tift (New Front Row Motorsports car, charter obtained from BK Racing liquidation)
41 - Daniel Suarez
47 - Ryan Preece
95 - Matt Dibenedetto (LFR takes over as Gibbs affiliated team after Furniture Row Racing folded)
Rule changes
Post race technical inspection done at the track - no more mid week penalties.
If 1st place car fails tech inspection, THAT CAR IS DISQUALIFIED and all benefits of the win will be taken away. 2nd place car gets the win, if they fail it goes to 3rd, etc. Failing post race will send that car to the bottom of the race standings, meaning only 1 point awarded.
Rumors
Gen 7 car confirmed for 2021, new engine for 2022. Car is rumored to be smaller to resemble production models more. Car rumored to have interchangeable features to make cost of racing a lot cheaper. Dodge and Nissan rumored to be interested.
2020 is the last year of the race schedule contracts. After that, tracks with multiple races can lose the 2nd race. Nashville, Gateway (St Louis), Pikes Peak (Denver), and several road courses are lobbying for spots on the schedule. All Star race in 2020 rumored to be heading to Nashville.
As soon as I get word about fantasy I'll update the OP post.

Whoa. That’s a big change

Yep. Was announced yesterday - the Brian France era of complacency with cheating to win has ended. Jim France is in charge and allowed the competition crew to FINALLY throw a hammer at the plague in stock car racing. Now it's just going to be a sense of wait and see who is going to be the first to get caught.
Theres some new guidelines for prerace inspection as well, specifically dealing with the areas around the wheels. Listened to Scott Millers interview yesterday on Speedway and he said itll be damn near impossible to mask your intentions by tearing up the car with a burnout now.

Might have to give NASCAR another chance.
I'll be interested to see if this actually gets enforced.

I would. Ever since Brian was arrested and taken away it's been a good run. These rule changes will help more.
Paint schemes are coming out since then arrive in Daytona tomorrow. Corey Lajoie's is....interesting. Old Spice put his face on the hood. Lolz

I got Matt D at 200/1. He's dropped down to 100/1-66/1 at some books. New car, as long as he stays out of trouble I like his chances.
Got Blaney at 12/1, Elliott at 10/1 and E Jones at 22/1.

These cars are inspected before practice, right? And before and after qualifying. and before the race. Anyone failing the post race must be an incredible dumbass.

Failing inspection pre race is a big deal now too. 3rd fail results in a drive through pit road after the start I think. 4th one resultsbin crew chief suspension and fines.
I may be a bit off but it’s significant.

How is Busch going to do in the 1 car compared with what he had at Stewart Haas?
Posted on 2/6/19 at 9:52 pm to Horsemeat
Haven’t watched much since Jr left but I’ll tune in as much as I can during Daytona to see if there is a driver or team that I can follow.

That's a solid team. He'll be fine.

I hope he can get another title before he retires. 2004 was a long time ago.

I remember when Speedweeks used to be a big deal. SPEED Channel would have live programming nearly every night of the week leading up to the Shootout and the 500.
Remember when it was still the Budweiser Shootout and they would draw beer bottles that had their starting position inside?

It started to go downhill when it was the Gatorade Duels

With the Gatorade 125’s mid week.
Now we got the Advance Auto Parts Clash and the Gander RV Duels.

More so it’s that they are pushing the envelope as far as they can
And before you say that’s a dumb thing to do remember there are 39 other guys who are pushing it as far as they can and you’ll be left behind

Ganassi is a solid team but they are just a notch below what’s stewart-Hass has been lately and the 1 car hasn’t ran as well as the 42
He will be ok but he won’t run quite as consistently well IMO and I’d be very surprised if he won a title

Dude has had quite a rollercoaster career since then. Was a total douche at Penske, sunk all the way back to a no name team, went to Furniture Row, etc. Its just the last few years where he finally seemed to calm down and quit being the worlds biggest a-hole.

It was nice to watch the transformation.
Now his brother has the a-hole title.
