My thoughts on UVA/UMBC
I am prepared for the "ha ha, you lost" and other demeaning comments about the loss, the team, program, etc. I try to have thicker skin than that. I just have to ramble for a second now that I've had time to step away from the ledge.

1. UVA, as a team, program, coach, player, and fan base, must own the loss. Any attempts to justify it or reduce the severity of the loss is asinine.
2. Some of you have watched UVA play this game maybe for the first time this year. Some have probably watched a few more here and there. I watched literally every game with the exception of 2. And that was not the same team I have watched throughout the year. There was a snowball effect that went into play once we couldn't generate offense and they continued to make the shots they did (50%+ from 3!), ...it started spiraling downhill. The players lost composure and started to take poor shots and stared to wither on defense. The most upsetting part was to see our resolve crumble when I had seen it be a strength throughout the year. In the end, UMBC was clearly the better team that night.
3. This loss hurts bad. But I am still super proud of the overall season. To only lose 2 games the entire regular season and win the ACC tourney is special. It's so classic UVA for it to end in that fashion and on that stage.
4. I think Tony will continue to tweak his system, and I wouldn't trade him for any coach in the country. He does things the right way and I have confidence he'll break through eventually if he keeps plugging away at it. I didn't think his press conference would sooth anything over, but it actually gave me optimism for the future.

Perfect storm. One of UVA's best players out and UMBC was on absolute fire shooting. I did think UVA gave up in the 2nd half, which I'd be pissed about if I was a UVA fan.

The loss of Hunter was big, but I didn't mention that on purpose for a couple reasons.

1. It sounds like an excuse.
2. We should have been able to beat UMBC without him. I did think before the tourney that it limited our potential down the stretch, but we didn't get a chance to find that out...

After a while, UVA just quit. I've never seen a team just completely give up in the way UVA did.

Virginia just isn't that good.

They would have lost to Kentucky (possibly Kansas State). They are a system team with no real star power. They also aren't a team that can overcome a decent deficit.

I'm ok with it being mentioned. Like I said, UVA will be back at at it next year and Tony will be around for a long, long time. You can say on a message board that you're not worried, but I know deep down, the rest of the ACC wishes he wasn't the head coach at UVA.

Bennett needs to go grab a one and done, star level player here and there and mix it in with his current system.

I get what you're saying, but there are a few examples this year alone to prove otherwise.

I had UVA as my national champs before the Hunter injury and I took them out in the Sweet 16 after I learned he was out for the year. He was so important because he was one of the only guys who really initiate his own offense for UVA.

Yep. He is a threat outside and inside and is superb defensively. Our only NBA talent in my opinion (although Kyle Guys is borderline).

re: My thoughts on UVA/UMBC
UVA started throwing up threes too early. Then got too concerned with all the threes dropping on defense and came out a little too much to stop em, opening up lanes into the middle to my untrained eye. I think UVA got away from what they do too soon and the snowball really got rolling.

Maybe they stay red hot outside and you still lose but I'd rather go down doing what got me there.

Yep. Was bound to happen. Always thought it would be Purdue, or some other once in a while #1 seed.

UVA probably wins that game 9.9/10 times. This board is just obsessed with saying, "oh you lost, your team sucks."

No one can say for certain any team "would have lost" to some other team. Especially this year.

Whether or not you call it an excuse, UVA’s season was toast once Hunter went down.

I also saw each of our games this year. Regardless of stats, Hunter was by far the most important player in the team. Easily 4-5 more losses on the resume without him, maybe more, which would have dropped them from the 1 seed. They were not the same team that took the court throughout the season.

UVA if they had made it through the first weekend absent Hunter, would have never beaten UK without him. Conversely, I don’t think anybody in the South Region besides UK would have beaten them with Hunter. Yes

re: My thoughts on UVA/UMBC
I wanted to bump this thread. Amazing to see where we were at a year ago.

A couple things come to mind:
- Tony did in fact tweak things. He sat down with Ty Jerome and his staff and asked for input on how to manage those situations for the future. He also reached out to a trusted friend for advice on how to make their offense better. The numbers showed this year with our offensive explosion in terms of efficiency and we are not just running a mover blocker system.
- Our resolve was tested and we used UMBC as a rallying cry. Can you imagine the collective a-holes that were clinched during Gardner Webb? That would have been a loss if not for their level of resiliency and ability to calm down. There was a story that coaches were yelling at the players last year during UMBC halftime. This year during Gardner Webb the coaches just told everyone to play their game and was very poised about it. Awesome to see how they’ve matured and reacted differently.
- the impact Hunter had on our team. I made it a “non excuse” last year but In retrospect it was a pretty big deal. We don’t win this championship without him.
- It’s disappointing to see how many people don’t think we deserved to be here. I feel like UVA does everything right in today’s game. Coaching and mentoring young men into leaders. They go to class. They have integrity and are humble. Reliance on faith and humility. No one and done players. All the right things. It’s crazy to think that people believe that we rigged the system or that ncaa had us in their back pockets. Did we get some good bounces? Sure. But almost all champions do in this tournament system. And the bounces went the other way for the opponents as well but people choose to hone in the ones that benefitted UVA only. Doesn’t seem very fair.
-felt terrible for Chris Beard and TT. Class coach and I have a strong feeling he will be competing for years to come. Hated to see how emotional he was during the post game.
