there has to be a middle ground between this current Wild West system where guys can hold out and demand more money damn near the entire calendar year with unlimited portal hops, and the last system where guys couldn’t have their own monetary YouTube channel or get an off-campus job while the school made millions selling their $100 jersey in the team store. They just went way too far from one direction to the other.
I don't think there can be. It's either the players can get paid or they can't.
In an absolutely picture perfect dream world, I am fully and totally supportive if a true NIL. And by true, I mean *literally* name/image/likeness. As in, a player can get a percentage of all sales of his jersey from the bookstore. Or host autograph sessions and keep some of the money. Or do a TV spot for some local businesses in exchange for compensation. THAT is actual NIL and I fully support that. But the millisecond that you ok that, the vile and evil scum that run rampant in this world will exploit it.
The best stopgap I can think of to stop the bleeding here and now is to simply stop the transfers. The money situation is so far gone that will take a while to correct but AT LEAST if you stop the transfers it will keep players at their school which is a good start. Go back to the old days: if you want to transfer you have to sit out. Period. No exceptions.

As someone posted earlier, when you hire a prostitute sometimes you get to meet the pimp.
I love this system because it exposes all the schools who have been giving hand jobs to every idiotic 4 and 5 star and are now reaping what you sowed.
You notice mid level teams aren’t whining and crying because they’ve had recruits flip on signing day for decades because of under the table money.
And Saban didn’t tell us jack. All Saban knew was his reign as the bagman king was over so he quit.
What’s the topper is all these top recruits you guys were fawning over at signing day are all watching and will come up with even better ways to screw you. I love it.
Maybe the easy solution is to recruit quality college students who are good at football. Sure, you might be 6-6 every year but you won’t get the clap from the prostitutes you currently roll out the red carpet for.

Everybody in this thread is bitching about football. It’s such a nonissue in football, last year was awesome.
Where the dynamics are going to actually change in basketball. With one and dones and now an unmitigated portal, I don’t know that we’ll ever see old mid major teams make noise. If a guy develops into a good player, a big time program will just scoop him up and 1 player obviously makes much more of a difference in basketball rather than football

I’m shocked that SEC fans want to stop the portal. Shocked! Of course, you want to stack talent and then restrict their movement for 4 years. Heaven forbid they realize your coaches lied to them and now can’t change teams. That will never happen because it never made sense and thankfully the courts agreed.
Welcome to the world of college football where the other 80% of schools have been dealing with depth issues for decades.

well, now those same midlevel teams are seeing their star players that were diamond in the roughs bolting for the big boys after a big season. There is zero chance whatsoever that a mid-level team will ever win a natty ever again.

yeah the whole "saban was right" crowd is....odd. Anyone with a modicum of common sense could see what was happening.

I like how fans of lesser teams think this is some kind of SEC whining issue. This affects everyone. I'm sure it wasn't fun for you wathcing Jahmyr gibbs go to a powerhouse as soon as he realized he could.

No school in america has had to deal with having to re-recruit the entirety of their top to bottom roster every single year, as well as periodically throughout the season as well. Nobody. Quit making this out to be a "haha the big bad sec is finally suffering!" issue and recognize that it's really a "how the frick did college football turn into NFL-lite with no rules in only 5 years?" issue.

Idk why I'm even answering since you aren't actually serious and just want to troll (poorly at that...) but in the last 50 years Pittsburgh, BYU, Colorado, GT, and Washington have all won titles.
With the current system, as soon as any tema of that caliber gets good enoguh to even think of being in the discussion they'll just lose the talent that made it that way as they go play for a bama/ohio state/texas/etc.

Ah yes, that's right. I am a federal judge that enacted the policies we see today. My cover is blown.

Mid level teams have never amassed enough talent to win anything because even if a kid committed to them in 10th grade an SEC school would simply offer him a bag and he’d flip.
I would ask all you SEC guys who have become soft and spoiled with bagman money to take off your team glasses for a moment and put yourself in the shoes of the mid level programs.
How would you feel if your staff spent years building relationships with players in middle and high school and then 2 days before signing you get a call from the kids high school coach that Clemson just offered him 150K to sign with them because Clemson's #1 option at that position flipped to UGA because they offered him 200K. That is what has been happening for 40 years to every mid level program. And then that player never sees the field but was stuck at the school for 4 years.
We’ve all seen it play out on this very board. A GT commit flips to UGA due to a bag of cash, then GT flips a commit to Coastal Carolina and then everyone laughs and makes fun of the mid level teams poaching from each other.
Now, that high end players have figured out they have monetary power you guys are up in arms. That’s what happens when you treat them as if they are special. They aren’t. The University of Georgia would continue to be a top notch public university whether Kirby bought an NFL defense and won 2 Natties or not, just like GT will long be a top tier research institute long after football no longer exists.

Dawg, I hear what you’re saying. What you aren’t understanding is that mid level schools are use to all this. We lose 4 star recruits every year for the past 50 years due to bagmen at UGA, Bama, Auburn, Clemson, and FSU. And we have had to re-recruit our rosters ever off season. That’s why we go after athletes who are also students and don’t go after every NFL player.
The shock of losing Gibbs to Bama was nothing compared to the shock that he actually signed with us. And the ONLY reason he did sign with GT over the Florida bagman was because he didn’t believe Florida’s staff at that time (smart move by him) and Auburn came sniffing too late.
We all knew he would leave once the coaches at the big program’s realized they screwed up by not building the relationship in 9th and 10th grade. It’s the same way we signed Calvin back in the day (plus his mom wanted him to have a real degree).
Now, that the big SEC teams are dealing with these issues suddenly it’s a national emergency? It’s not. You are now having to deal with players just like we have had to. The difference is your players on average are a lot better because of your bagman system in the recruitment process so you are having to fend off more suitors. Of course, you want to end the portal. If I were a UGA fan that’s exactly what I would want to do to. But, the world has changed and now you have to deal with every school having bagmen. GT signed its first 5 star ever. I expect him to be gone in the December portal when UGA or Bama offer him 2 million plus but at least we are in the game now because we ponied up. The days of you guys having NFL caliber backups are over.

why did you cut off the rest of my quote? Oh right, because it strengthens my case and weakens yours.
-2022 Washington: multiple losses to unranked teams, makes the alamo bowl
-2023 Washington: put together a fantastic season and make the title game
What happened next?
-Their HC and OC both immediately left for better jobs
-They had over a dozen players transfer with 6 going to the SEC
In addition to the normal situation of having their best players go pro early or gradaute
soooooo yeah, thanks for the assistance!
