Pretty specific topic, but I find it interesting that some programs simply ‘own’ others in a rivalry that features two decent teams. I’ve put an asterisk on the word rivalry for obvious reasons.

Texas v Arkansas - Horns lead 56-22. This rivalry produced a ‘Game of the Century’ which Arky choked away. It’s noteworthy to mention that the Hogs have won 6 of the last 11. The telling stat is that during the golden era of Arkansas football (I.e under Broyles), they were 4-14 against UT.

Texas v Texas A&M - we will stick with the Horns. They own a 76-37-5 advantage. Aggies will call themselves the ‘little sisters of the poor’ in the old days, but also have retroactively claimed titles from the early days that would suggest otherwise.

Penn State v WVU - I realize West Virginia doesn’t carry the same weight as Penn State, but they are behind in this one 48-9-2. It hasn’t been played since 1992, so that probably has had some impact.

UNC v NC State - Neither program is a world beater, but they’ve both been to over 30 bowl games and have over .510 winning percentage all-time. UNC leads 68-36-6. Since 1970, UNC has had two streaks of 7 in a row, oddly enough State has two streaks of 5. The whole rivalry is kind of funky like that.

Michigan v Minnesota - I’m not suggesting Minnesota is a premier program, but they claim 7 national titles. They still trail 76-25-3.

Michigan v Michigan St - similar to the one above, State claims 6 titles. They’ve had their time in the sun. They are behind 71-37-5 and that’s with the Spartans winning 9 of the last 13.

Alabama v LSU - 54-26-5 Tide. If Auburn can keep a rivalry with Bama closer, so should LSU. Many times these teams met up on nearly equal footing, only to see the Tide win.

Auburn v Clemson - Surprised to see Auburn hold a 34-15-2 lead. I guess they dodged some great Clemson teams.

Oklahoma v Okie State - the Sooners lead 90-18-7. I’m not comparing the programs directly from a historical standpoint, but that’s pathetic. Gundy is 2-14 against OU and is 1-4 when the Pokes are the higher ranked team.

Auburn played Clemson in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017.

We’ve played them a lot recently when they have been incredible.

Auburn also played them in a bowl game following the 2007 season.

How many of those games did bear and saban win combined
That’s the difference
Saban was dominating bama while at LSU and would’ve gotten it a lot closer if he stayed long term at LSU

You included NC State so I'm going to include Oregon State.

USC is 63-11 against Oregon State.

Oregon State thinks they're a rival ever since the "Giant Killers" upset OJ and Oregon State upset USC during Carroll's run at #1.

meh

Being a school similar to what A&M was back then wasn't a hindrance in the 20s and 30s. Tiny arse schools could field competitive teams. Then things changed by the 50s and 60s and that's when everything went to shite. A&M made changes to the university and within one generation, became competitive and the series between the mid 70s to its ending only had like a one game difference

Those Bama teams were crippled by scholarship reductions. Most were dominating Bama in those years. They still managed a 31-0 win over Saban

If you took out every Bryant and Saban win over LSU, Bama still leads the series

Bryant won 16 while at Bama. Saban won 11 while at Bama. 27 of the 54 wins. Alabama would still lead the series by 7 if you remove the Bryant/Saban years (27-20-5), which accounts for 39 years.

Maryland beat Penn State this past season. They also beat the Nittany Lions the first time they played post Paterno. Their only other win was a few year before Paterno was coach.

40-3-1

When Penn State didn’t end up joining the Big East and with WVU starting to get more established under Nelhen, that coward Joe Pa didn’t want to play

There is a home and home soon and there was supposed to be a neutral site game in Pittsburgh to start a three game series but it was cancelled.

I guess Tennessee isn't what we call decent anymore following Alabama's 14 year winning streak.

This thread would need a sensitive subject matter warning for the Aggie boys if it was on the SEC rant

Obviously not a rivalry, but a funny little nugget. Also interesting that Texas is 7-1-1 against ‘Bama. 6 of those matchups were in bowl games, so you were getting two good teams on the field.

Lopsided yes, but I think Washington has been a historically relevant program, Wazzu not so much.
