The decline of Municipal Stadium mirrored the decline of Cleveland. I keep hearing about a bit of a rebound, and haven’t been there since 2011, so I haven’t seen it.

Fact is, it’s simple: new stadiums were built. They needed new money. The new money people are not the factory workers, steel mill workers, guys from the brewery, etc. It’s big business money.

Few new stadiums have been able to get that atmosphere of the older stadiums.

Arrowhead has been mentioned. I think Invesco still gets loud. Heinz Field is still a tough place.

That sounds all well and good, but you wouldn't get any Lions fans to an outdoor game this weekend at 5-9. In the friendly confines of a warm stadium with decent food and alcohol? Yeah.

FedEx Field is only 20 years old and people have been bitching about how terrible it is for years :

From what I understand, no one every really liked it to begin with. It's outside of the city, they already had to remove seats, and it's just unaesthetic (among a laundry list of other issues.)

They've been talking about getting a new stadium back within the city itself for years but that's a whole different fight. For example, the old RFK stadium sits on federal land and building a new stadium there would have to go through all kinds of political hoops if I'm not mistaken.

Metlife is pretty damn generic looking.

As is Jerry World.

A lot of NFL stadiums are.

Since all football fields are the same dimensions, who cares how "generic" or "bland" they are? Does it really matter? As long as the sight lines are good and the seating is comfortable, do you spend one nanosecond once the game starts on the artistic merits of the structure?

Considering there's a ton of downtime during a football game, yes.

Absolutely. I had a blast at the new Vikings stadium looking at its structure, its view of downtown, and the massive doors in front.

I used to have a terrible time in Charger stadium needing binoculars even in the lower bowl, and a "big screen" that may be the size of a rich man's tv.

I spent the most of the 1st quarter of a Seahawks game just walking the concourse.

nope you're completely right.

I actually saw this article in ESPN too about the concessions and thought to myself, no way in hell do I even care about the food at a game. I'm there for the game, and get me some beers, I'll eat before or after.

Now if the place has a better beer selection, thats a plus.

I was just there last Monday. I wish I would have just walked the concourses instead of watching the Vikings puddle themselves on the field.

Definitely a nice venue, and a great crowd

The Panthers stadium is boring as frick but there isn't really a bad seat in the house.

Even in the upper deck you don't feel like your far away from the action.

I don’t think the football stadium architecture is as high of a priority as a baseball stadium, but it can still feature some nice design qualities.

I mean, do high rise office buildings NEED to be great works of architecture? Not really. But if you are spending a shitload of money anyway, make it a symbol. I’m sure the building designers would rather do that than use some template for every building that is bland and plain.

I hear people constantly bitch about FedEx.

The same thing happened in St Louis. What makes these venues obsolete after a short period of time?

A shelf life for a stadium should be longer than 20 years. The Edward Jones Dome wasn’t old. Does it mean it was just built on the cheap or what?

That and the GeorgiaDome seem like a big waste of money in hindsight.

This has me wondering, what will be the next stadium that lasts a long time, but becomes iconic and revered in the process?

Do we really think the Cowboys stay in their palace for another 60 years or so?

This. I think some of this contrived character in a lot of stadiums is much more ridiculous than obvious symmetry. Tampa's stupid pirate ship, or that pointless arched opening on the side of the endzone in New England are two that come to mind.

That being said, I really dig Seattle's stadium. It's quirkiness is perfectly symmetrical, though.

I agree with this as well. Is it really necessary to have gourmet food at a football game that costs 5 times as much as it should? As long as they sell beer, cokes, and hot dogs, I think I can manage for 3 hours. I'm there to watch football, not for fine dining. A good beer selection is nice, but when they're already charging $12+ for a 16 oz domestic, is it really worth spending even more money on overpriced beer?
