I haven't seen this discussed here.

In an attempt to spwed up the game and get more balls in play, the MLB and the Atlantic League have agreed to a series of experimental rule changes over the next couple of years.

Some rule changes in the Atlantic League this year:

20 less seconds between innings
Pitchers must face three batters
Mound visits are banned all together
Two infielders are required on each side of second base
Larger bases, from 15 to 18 inches

Next year:
Radar assisted umpiring for balls and strikes
Moving the pitching rubber back two feet

20 less seconds between innings - sounds good

Pitchers must face three batters - not opposed to this necessarily

Mound visits are banned all together - eh, nope

Two infielders are required on each side of second base - vehemently disagree with this

Larger bases, from 15 to 18 inches - safety issue?

Radar assisted umpiring for balls and strikes - opposed to this

Moving the pitching rubber back two feet - opposed to this

No to all of it. I hate to say this, but bring back Selig. Manfried is going to ruin the game.

All of that sucks except for the 20 less seconds between innings.

The only rule change I like is the radar assisted umpiring for balls and strikes. The other rule changes either are dumb or unnecessary.

Forgive my ignorance but in what situation would a pitcher not face 3 batters in an inning?

Or is this a rule to prevent making a pitching change to get 1-2 guys out and then changing again?

Yes. It wouldn't allow a pitcher to come in to face just one batter.

2 feet is pretty significant. Maybe lower the mound or move it back a foot at most. But all that will do is have pitchers try harder to paint the corner resulting in more walks.

Yeah they need to focus on fostering more stars and less on tinkering with a few rules thinking it’s going to solve their problem.

Really the only thing that’s going to fix this is to reduce home runs to their historical average so players will stop swinging up so much (resulting in more strikeouts as well as more home runs). A combination of changes in mound height and ball stitching (pause) alone can fix this.

Congratulations. They’ve found a way to remove less than 6 minutes.

thumbs up

Radar assisted umpiring for balls and strikes

knee jerk reaction I like it but... is this going to be used for every pitch or more of a mangers challenge for egregious calls basis?

quote:

Pitchers must face three batters

interesting but what happens if there is an injury?

quote:

Mound visits are banned all together

limited amount of visits either per pitcher or per inning ok, banned completely no

hell no

You don’t want this; trust me. Of all balls called strikes and strikes called balls that are incorrect, Not only do the masses agree with the majority of these calls, but the masses would find it unconscionable to call them technically “correct.”

Examples:
- pitch breaks downward, nicks the front of the strike zone, and hits the dirt. Ump always calls this a ball.
- catcher frames to one side, and pitcher “misses,” nicks the opposite side of the strike zone, and catcher has to reach far across his body to catch the pitch. Called ball.
- batter crouches right as ball is released. Catcher catches ball right in front of his mask. Pitch is technically above strike zone, but called a strike

Pitches like these happen more often than the straight-up wrong calls happen. “Correcting” pitches like these with robots would alter the game in ways that we really don’t want.

For fricks sake, if you keep changing the rules this drastically then it isnt even the same sport anymore. No more mound visits? They cant even talk about candlestick holders anymore?

So basically we can’t compare pitching stats from that point on cause that is a big change.

Fielders should be able to stand where they want on the field that’s called strategy. 20 seconds between innings, okay whatever. Taking away visits to the mound is like taking timeouts away from any sport.

I love how they want more offense but shorter games at the same time. Watch them implement all these rule changes and games start going 4+ hours.
