Cardinals are already tight on the 40 man roster, so it may have something to do with that. If they sign someone they would have to leave someone they like exposed.

One of the guys the Twins picked up was drafted by the Angels in the 2017 draft, he won't need to be on the 40 man for another 4 or 5 years.

When you consider that the Cardinals didn't have early draft picks in 2017, I just feel like a move like that would make sense. Maybe they tested the waters and just didn't like the available prospects.

The particular trade between the Angels and Twins sticks out to me though because the Angels traded a guy that was committed to LSU, but they gave him $1mm to sign. Otherwise he'd be a freshman at LSU. He joins two other LSU 2017 signees in the Twins top 30 prospects.

Any idea when Stanton will make up his mind?

from rosenthal

In recent days, multiple major league sources have told The Athletic that Stanton does not want the San Francisco Giants or St. Louis Cardinals, the two teams that have reached trade agreements with the Marlins, pending the player’s approval.
Stanton’s thinking is fluid, other sources say—he does not deal in absolutes. Perhaps the Giants could sway him if they landed Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani. Perhaps the Cardinals could build their own convincing case by trading for Rays closer Alex Colome and third baseman Evan Longoria.
Both teams, though, likely are growing impatient. Giants officials met in Los Angeles with Stanton and his representatives at the Wasserman Media Company last Friday. Cardinals officials met with the Stanton group on Saturday. Stanton is known to be deliberate in his decision-making, but his suitors cannot wait on him the entire off-season, and soon might turn to other solutions.

The Marlins have made their desperate need to dump costs too obvious, so Stanton holds all the cards. I think he'll get the Dodgers deal in the end.

not unless they change their stance of not wanting to take back any short term money. the dodgers arent taking back the type of money that the cards and giants were willing to unless they can get rid of enough money right now to still get under the tax

I dont see how this immediately makes the Giants a contender. We really aren't certain how good the guy is going to be quite yet. Even if he was good, San Fran was the worst team in the league this past season.

Interesting. What prospects would the Dodgers give up to get him? I don’t see the Cardinals getting Colome and Longoria. Sounds like it’s time to move onto someone else. I still don’t see how no trade clauses are wise decisions for small market teams like the Marlins. They are likely going to have to take a weak deal to move him.

Looks like Stanton chose the 4 teams with probably the best ready-to-win young cores in baseball. Good thinking.

Yeah, but how many of those four have even thought about dealing for him? I know the Dodgers and Yankees have shown interest, but I haven't heard much from the Cubs or Astros

Not sure how serious the Yankees are, I mean they are cutting payroll and don't need offense as much as pitching. Of course Stanton would want to go to a few of the young teams.

It looks like the Marlins want to hold on to Yellich, so I hope the Cardinals pivot to Ozuna and take on Ziegler to offset what needs to be sent back (assuming Grichuk, Martinez, or both are part of that deal).

Once that is squared away, Piscotty can be sent to the A's so he can be in the Bay Area with his family (has already been discussed as a move).

That's two or three OFs out of the way with one coming in.

I think they make a play for Colome as well, but not Longoria. I just don't know what the Rays are looking for. If somehow Alcantara isn't a part of the deal to get Ozuna, he's probably going to be a part of any deal to get Colome. Along with some of the high minors OFs that are blocked right now like Mercado, Arozarena, Adolis Garcia, or Sierra. They just can't hold onto all of them.

I’d rather have Ozuna anyway. Yelich isn’t much of a big bat. You’d be trading low on Piscotty though. But there is a logjam of OF’s, so someone has to go.
