In a move that’s sure to jolt the market for starting pitchers, Yankees righty Masahiro Tanaka has decided against opting out of the remaining three years of his contract, he announced through the organization. Tanaka calls it a “simple decision” to remain with the organization, stating that he has “truly enjoyed the past four years playing for this organization and for the wonderful fans of New York.”

quote:

In any event, the Yankees have now perhaps effectively made their biggest addition of the winter. With Tanaka on the books, New York has something in the realm of $144MM committed to payroll already (including projected arbitration salaries) and the club is seemingly committed to staying beneath the luxury tax line in 2018.

quote:

NOV. 3: Miami is informing other teams that it is willing to listen on Stanton, Gordon, and Prado but will not entertain offers on Yelich and Ozuna at this time, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (via Twitter). Whether the stance on the latter two players might change isn’t yet clear. It’s possible that the club wishes to focus first on the other pieces.

quote:

The Orioles have declined their club options over shortstop J.J. Hardy and lefty Wade Miley, per a club announcement. Both players will hit the open market for the first time.

Trades:
quote:

Another day, another Mariners trade: the Chicago White Sox have acquired righty reliever Thyago Vieira from Seattle for international slot money.

quote:

The Mariners announced on Wednesday night that the club acquired infielder Ryon Healy from the Athletics in exchange for pitcher Emilio Pagan and infielder Alexander Campos.

quote:

Traded LHP J.P. Sears and RHP Juan Then to the Yankees for RHP Nick Rumbelow.

quote:

The Rangers are set to acquire right-hander Ronald Herrera from the Yankees, reports MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (on Twitter). The two teams announced the trade shortly thereafter, revealing that lefty Reiver Sanmartin is going to the Yankees in return. Herrera was on the Yankees’ 40-man roster and will thus be added to the Rangers’ 40-man roster as well.

quote:

The Yankees, looking to clear space on the 40-man roster before Monday’s 8 p.m. Eastern deadline, shipped first baseman and outfielder Garrett Cooper and left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith to Miami in exchange for right-handed pitcher Michael King and 2017-18 international signing bonus pool money.

quote:

MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm reports that the Cardinals have traded shortstop Aledmys Diaz to the Blue Jays in exchange for minor league outfielder J.B. Woodman.

quote:

The Mariners announced that the club has acquired second baseman Dee Gordon from the Marlins in exchange for minor leaguers Robert Dugger, Nick Neidert, and Christopher Torres. They will also receive $1 million in international slot money, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

quote:

The Yankees have acquired Giancarlo Stanton and 30 million from the Marlins in exchange of right-hander Jorge Guzman and shortstop Jose Devers . and Starlin Castro

quote:

The New York Yankees continued their active winter by trading Chase Headley and his $13 million salary to the San Diego Padres, it was announced Tuesday.

The Yankees sent Headley, reliever Bryan Mitchell and $500,000 in cash to the Padres in exchange for Jabari Blash, a 28-year-old outfielder who has hit .200 in 99 career games.

Signings:
quote:

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reportsthat the Tigers and free agent pitcher Mike Fiers have agreed on a one-year, $6 million contract. He notes that the Orioles had offered Fiers two years.

quote:

Cubs sign Tyler Chatwood of the Rockies 3 years 38 million

quote:

2:38pm: The Cubs will sign Morrow to a contract worth $10MM to $11MM per year, according to Heyman. Two year deal with option for 3rd

quote:

The Cardinals and free agent reliever Luke Gregerson have agreed to a two-year, $11MM contract with a vesting option, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports (via Twitter). The deal is pending a physical.

quote:

Nightengale has the details on Neshek’s contract (via Twitter): It’s worth $16.25MM and includes a $4MM signing bonus. He’ll make $5.75MM in both 2018 and 2019, and he’ll collect either $7MM or a $700K buyout in 2020.

quote:

The Phillies have agreed to a deal with free agent right-hander Tommy Hunter, according to FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman. Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer (via Twitter) was the first to report that the Phillies were moving towards a deal with Hunter, rather than a previously-reported deal with righty Addison Reed that proved to be incorrect.

quote:

The Rockies have agreed to a deal with free agent righty Bryan Shaw, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports (Twitter link). Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported earlier tonight (Twitter links) that talks between the two sides are “advanced” and “nearly done.” The deal is a three-year contract that will pay Shaw in the area of $9MM per season, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney

Tribe needs Santana and Bruce. Carlos really became a huge asset in the field.

My interests:
How can the Astros upgrade their bullpen?
How do the Cubs address their SP concerns?
What power bat does Boston go for?
Will Baltimore accept they need to rebuild?
Where does Darvish go? Possibly connected is where does Otani go?
AL West in general
Marlins trade Giancarlo/can anyone contend with the Nats for the NL East next year?

Brandon Kintzler

I would prefer someone with more strikeout ability, and we need a lefty most of all. I don’t think Kintzler is our guy but I wouldn’t hate it for the right price
