Can’t wait for the HoF to lose all credibility when Ortiz gets in over Bonds and Arod.

If Greg Maddux was a Yankee he probably would have been 100% too.

Who the frick were the 11 voters that didn't vote Babe Ruth into the inagural class?

95.13%

Ted Williams: 93.4%, 19 people did not vote for him.

Willie Mays: 94.7%, 22 people did not vote for him.

I imagine none of the people who did not vote for Willie Mays would ever admit it.

Theory: What theory could possibly explain how 22 people who allegedly have watched a baseball game in their lives did not vote for Willie Mays?

Rickey Henderson, 94.8%, 27 people did not vote for him.

Hmm. Scored more runs than any player in baseball history? Check. Stole more bases than any player in baseball history? Check. Posted a career .401 on-base percentage, walked more than any man other than Barry Bonds, managed 3,000 hits on top of that, was just three shy of 300 career home runs? Check, check, check, check on the sanity of the 27 people who did not vote for him.

Mickey Mantle, 88.2%, 38 people did not vote for him.

Not surprised to see Mariano get 100% but the first should have been Ken Griffey Jr.

1st should have been Babe Ruth................

Its amazing that in ALL the history of baseball that the "CLOSER" roll did not become prominent until the last 30 years............

horseshite that a relief pitcher is the first to get 100% of the vote, even if he is great.

It's not a knock on Mariano, it's a knock on the voters for all of the other players who were deserving that never got 100% of the vote, and then of all people a relief pitcher is the first player they vote in with 100%.

On the bright side, this paves the way for future 100% votes

This is literally the only explanation.

Aside from that, yeah, no way should Mariano be the first unanimous selection.

I have two takes: that's a pretty weak class and who the frick voted for Placido Polanco?

This screams recency bias. Anyone who saw Mo in his prime would agree with his unanimous vote.

I bet there’s a contingent of sportswriters that are happy it was a relief pitcher as a pushback against advanced analytics.

Analytics nerds don’t value relief pitchers much. Old school baseball sportswriters don’t like analytics because those advanced facts expose a lot of bullshite from NE sportswriters

That's the opposite of recency bias btw. I don't have a problem with Mariano being unanimous, I just think the voters are fricking morons for ignoring all of the other guys who should have clearly been unanimous before we got to this point.

Mo shouldn't have been the first, there have been others just as deserving.

That being said, take the "first" out of it and he's certainly deserving of 100% IMO.

What is the limit on number of guys you can vote for and has it always been that way?

I’ve always heard that as the explanation for why a lot of obvious guys didn’t get unanimous, because people left them off so they could essentially vote for more people knowing the Griffey’s of the world were getting in.

Or maybe he wasn't on the field enough to find faults.

When you have to field, hit and run...and play 9 innings, over time people are going to find faults.
