Three Michigan State University basketball players took turns raping an aspiring female sports journalist and when she told university employees, they discouraged her from going to police, according to a federal lawsuit filed Monday.

It’s amazing the steps Penn State and now MSU have taken to protect their programs. Absolutely disgusting.

That's a really brutal accusation. Drugging and gang raping an 18 year old ... And they don't want to name names or try and prosecute them. Going after the school makes sense but go after the players and make it hurt if it's true.

The suit is against the counseling center not the basketball program.

“The MSUCC staff made it clear to (the victim) that if she chose to notify the police, she faced an uphill battle that would create anxiety and unwanted media attention and publicity as had happened with many other female students who were sexually assaulted by well-known athletes,” according to the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court.

I understand rape is a different entity with how victims can be perceived, but once I would be told this, I'd run so fast to the nearest police station and tell all.

I was just about to say, in fairness to MSU, the Title IX aspect of these cases makes me uneasy sometimes (bring criminal charges and sue the shite out of the guys who did this to you). However, if the school was trying to bury this, it should be torched and I'm glad she has this remedy.

"One of the team members invited the woman to a party and lied and said her roommate was on her way there, the suit alleges. The victim was having trouble holding on to her glass even though she had not had a lot to drink, according to the complaint.

She accepted a ride with two of the basketball players and ended up at an apartment where one of them lived, but her roommate was not there and there was no party, according to the lawsuit. The victim was feeling very hungry, thirsty and “discombobulated,” the suit says. She tried to text but could not control her thumbs and the suit alleges she thought she may have been drugged."

^^^ Does this sound like GHB?

"One of the players pulled her into bedroom and told the victim, “You are mine for the night,” according to the suit, but she was able to leave the bedroom. The player who lived at the apartment offered to show the victim basketball memorabilia, and the room went dark, according to the suit.

She was thrown face-down on the bed and held in place while one of the players raped her from behind, the suit alleges, then the other two players came in and took turns raping her."

This sounds like they've done it before, so they're serial predators.

“Plaintiff was told by the MSUCC staff that they had seen a lot of these cases with ‘guys with big names’ and the best thing to do is to ‘just get yourself better,’” according to the suit.

If this is true, MSU is about to get destroyed. This sounds worse than Baylor when you add in recent issues with football players and the Nassar case.

This seems to be an important part of the report:

quote:

35. When Plaintiff disclosed to the counselor that the three attackers were notable MSU athletes on the basketball team, the counselor suddenly announced to the Plaintiff that she needed another person in the room with her and the Plaintiff. The counselor’s demeanor completely changed.

36. Another MSUCC staff person was brought into the room.

37. Plaintiff was not clear who this additional person was or why this person was brought in.

38. The MSUCC staff told Plaintiff that her options were to either file a police report or deal with the aftermath of the rape(s) on her own.

39. The MSUCC staff made it clear to Plaintiff that if she chose to notify the police, she faced an uphill battle that would create anxiety and unwanted media attention and publicity as had happened with many other female students who were sexually assaulted by well-known athletes.

40. Comments were made by MSUCC staff to the effect of “we have had many other students in the same situation who have reported, and it has been very traumatic for them.”

41. Plaintiff was told by the MSUCC staff that they had seen a lot of these cases with “guys with big names” and the best thing to do is to “just get yourself better” implying to the Plaintiff that it would not be in the Plaintiff’s best interest to report the incident to law enforcement.

42. Plaintiff was expressly told by MSUCC staff that "if you pursue this, you are going to be swimming with some really big fish."

Go straight to the police and not the school if what alleged occurred. After 3 years, finding out what happened will be difficult

Saw somewhere she didn’t go to the police because she had been underage drinking and was worried she would get in trouble. Understandable thought process for a naive college student. We just need to drop the drinking age to 18, this is ridiculous.

This isn't entirely wrong. May not be the best thing to bring up in an initial meeting. But, as frank or callous as it sounds, it's fairly accurate.

And I'm betting that the counselor was male and as soon as the conversation turned the least bit sexual (victim mentioning the assault), per policy, he was required to have an outside witness. This sounds like a plaintiff's attorney painting innocent or routine actions as nefarious.

For the reading comprehension- and logic-impaired, no I'm not saying the players and school are innocent. But this reads just like a filing by one sides attorney.
