Just finished the Amazon series “All or Nothing” on the 2017 season. I thought a lot of the players were likeable, like Gary and Winovich. Didn’t care for any of the QB personalities. Liked Pep Hamilton and the DC Brown. I didn’t dislike Harbaugh, but there’s just something missing in how he connects with people. His dad Jack gave a great talk before the bowl game.

It’s pretty incredible that most of the players featured are back for 2018, and Shea Patterson is a huge pickup. That guy is real good. If they had OSU at home I’d pick them to win the Big 10. Any insiders have a spring update?

What has Michigan really done since they split a title in 1997?

Harbaugh needs to make noise this season.

D should be great, I have no idea bout the O. Problem is the schedule is pretty tough. Feels like an 8-4 coming and autistic Jim gets rattled enough that he goes and does something else. Four years and out is his MO, I believe.

He does, but at the same time the fact that they haven't done anything since 1997 is reason to give him more time. People act like he should already be about to dethrone/challenge OSU every single year, when the program has been down for 20 years. Those things usually take time to change. Meyer walked into a much nicer situation. That said, I think they'll be really, really good this year.

You have several examples of coaches taking over elite programs that were down for some amount of time, and had said program in the title hunt by year three.

Michigan isn’t any different. It’s the coach that may not be another Stoops, Tressel, Carroll, Saban, Brown, etc.

I mean he did turn them around almost immediately. They were ranked #2 in 2016 iirc for a while, and had 3 close losses. Yeah they didn't have a Stoops or Saban like turnaround, but they're the most stable the've been since Carr. With how young their team was last year I honestly expect them to contend for the Big 10 and playoffs.

Hoke had an immediate “turnaround” too. I just don’t think you can make an argument that Harbaugh has met expectations.

Harbough’s biggest mistake was winning too soon at Michigan.

Michigan's biggest issue once again (for like the 5th year straight) is the offensive line.

It is bizarre to me that schools like stanford and wisconsin can recruit 3 star and even 2 star olineman that can push around any defense except for alabama.

Yet Michigan which recruits plenty of 4 star olinemna can't field a serviceable unit.

Michigan has recruited very good defensive talent that has turned out to be very good, as expected.

For some reason, the oline unit just will not improve. We have been through plenty of position coaches and none have fixed it.

all depends on the Oline. They'll get to the playoffs if they can solve that issue.

People forget about the 2006 team. Good enough to have warranted a playoff berth in the current landscape. Was talk of them being worthy of a rematch with ohio st.

But yeah nothing since then.

Lets look at fired lloyd Carrs last two years at Michigan

11-2, final rank #8

9-4, final rank #18

Boom. FIred

In Carrs final 6 seasons, they finished top 10 3 times

It seems nuts he was fired looking back

Officially he retired. At the time there were rumors he was sick but I guess nothing ever came from that.

The main reason why UM has not met expectations is that the rest of the Big 10 including Michigan State has upped its game. The real period of UM dominance of the Big Ten or when they shared with Ohio State was from about 1970 to 1985. After that the other schools of the big ten like Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa got serious about football and when ND got Lou Holtz things suddenly got more competitive for UM.

Harbaugh has to contend with Urban Meyer and Mark Dantonio for the best recruits of Ohio and Michigan which has always been the foundation of UM football. Sure UM recruits nationally but they have to get the players from Michigan and Ohio to win the big ten and compete for national titles.

It's not Harbaugh's fault that other schools have started or continue to put the resources toward football. If Michigan State hadn't decided to deemphasize football in the 1970s the whole Bo and Woody thing would have never happened.

Michigan suffers from little brother syndrome. I don't see them moving out of tOSU's shadow any time soon.
