In a tantalizing concession that he hasn't totally closed the door on another comeback, the Baltimore-raised Phelps told the Associated Press that it might be tough to stay away from the pool — especially if he attends the world championships in July in Budapest.

"The true test will be, if I do end up going over to the worlds this summer, do I have that itch again?" Phelps said Tuesday during a telephone interview.

He was already strongly considering his first comeback when he attended the 2013 championships in Barcelona, and there was no doubt he'd be back for his fifth Olympics when that meet ended.

"I was just like, 'This is a joke. How can these guys be swimming this slow?'" recalled Phelps, who was especially motivated by a disappointing performance from the men's relay team. "We'll see if I get that itch again."

I don't know... the last time this happened, he had just come out of his bout with alcoholism so the comeback was fueled by that chip on his shoulder.

Now, he is married, has a son, his life is pretty good, I'm not sure he does.

I tend to agree right now, but I am still guessing he gets bored, the competitive juices start flowing, etc. a little bit closer to Tokyo. If he doesn't do it this summer I think it will be next.

Yeah?

I feel like he willed himself to his success if Brazil.

I could EASILY see him having the same success if he got really serious(not that he wasn't last time) about these next games.

The first time he retired I didn't believe him for a second. This time I thought might be legit.

But I always figured if the Olympics was in a place that would be fun to go to....you're so good still why not just do the couple events youre best at or like to do most? Don't need to do 493839 events if you don't want to imo.

I never believed he wasn't racing in 2020. Even if it's just 1 or 2 events. I also don't believe Usain Bolt won't run at least 1 race in 2020 himself.

Easily I'm strongly doubting phelps could finish top 3 in his shortest race at ncaa's this year, the 100 fly. I have more faith in anthony ervin's old arse reappearing in another olympics than phelps.

The guy who won the silver medal couldn't finish top 3 in the NCAAs?

It's not like the dude who won gold finished first... because he did not.

Edit: Phelps has also never posted a time faster than what 3rd place finished in at ncaa's this year.

He won't be able to pass it up. He will get revved up and ready to go at some point.

Even if you know nothing about swimming, I would think someone who likes units enough to put "kilometers" in his user name would understand that swimming four 25 YARD laps will result in a much faster time than swimming two 50 METER laps.

Just so you know, Phelps still holds the world record for fastest 100m Fly, along with the 4th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 17th, 19th and 22nd best times EVER ( Top 25 times by event ).

Is this true? Was their some seismic shift in competitive swimming in recent years that would cause ridiculous drops in times?

How about you follow your own link and use 100 yard butterfly... you'll eventually find phelps at 20th best us performer (not performance!) with a 45.40. That scored you 6th this year at ncaa's.

It really comes down to he rarely swam yards... and caleb dressel is ridiculous short course yards. Top 2 were under the american/ncaa record and i legit believe 3rd would beat phelps at this age with that time.
