Obvious optimal strategy. Other coaches would’ve punted because that’s was the traditional thing to do.

It was a little different. Up by 6, 4th and 2, and from the 28.

Play calls like that are not made from the heart, they're made from the gut and balls and McVay sure has big ones

NFL coaches are just as retarded as college coaches.

Hell theyre worse maybe.

New minds infiltrate college ALL the time.

NFL coaches just stay retarded lol.

Eventually, GMs will expect coaches to make decisions based on probabilities and not some traditional tactics.

we're SO far away from that.

Also..

Defenses can see what offenses are lining up in.

How did Saban make this conversation? He’s a shite nfl coach and should not be in any nfl conversation

I think we'll see a significant shift in this behavior and taking "acceptable" risks based on probabilities with the new generation of coaches coming up. Some have started adjusting, but we're still a long way off, and most NFL coaches are profoundly stubborn and cautious.

One of the most notable examples was back in 2013 when Ron Rivera opted to kick a FG instead of going for it on 4th and inches at the goal line late in a game, despite the fact that he had Cam Newton, Mike Tolbert, Deangelo Williams, and Jonathan Stewart in his backfield. They were up 3 so the FG only put them up 6, and the Bills marched down the field to score the go ahead TD and win. Rivera credits that loss with helping him get away from traditional caution and lean more into analytics.

Makes great decisions on gameday (a great offensive mind as well) and comes home to this

Every statistics and game theory professor who's studied the NFL is always shocked at how rarely coaches go for it on 4th. It's one of the biggest points of lost value in an NFL game.

Hell, think about it from an anecdotal standpoint as a fan. When is the last time you felt confident about your defense stopping a team on 4th and 1?

It's just indescribably difficult to stop someone from getting 3 fvcking feet when they know where they're going, they know the snap count, they have a number of different options for who gets the ball, and you simply have to react.
