The LHSAA issued a blockbuster ruling against McKinley High that includes $41,968.14 in penalty fines and a two-year post-season ban in all sports, according to a document released Wednesday morning.

McKinley also was ordered to forfeit Division I runner-up finishes in girls basketball for 2017 and 2018. The ruling also states that unnamed “faculty” and “nonfaculty” coaches are suspended from coaching in the LHSAA for one year, the 2018-19 school year. The post-season ban is for 2018-19 and 2019-20. The ruling also states that there will be game/event forfeits in multiple sports.

These is the second sanctions issued to McKinley during the last three months. On April 17, the Class 5A school was cited for lack of administrative control, fined $2,500 and had its entire athletic program placed on disciplinary probation for two years for violations found in volleyball, girls junior varsity basketball, girls soccer and boys track.

The LHSAA memo accompanying the ruling states that eligibility issues found with the McKinley softball team that competed at the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA tournament led to a deeper investigation. The LHSAA found that eight players on the softball team were ineligible/not properly registered with the LHSAA prior to a semifinal game with Mount Carmel.

"It became apparent after the eligibility issue with the McKinley High softball team at the 2017-18 state tournament, that it was necessary to initiate and administer a thorough records check to make sure any/all student athletic participants at McKinley High School have been, and will continue, meeting any/all minimum eligibility requirements to participate," the LHSAA memo states. "During the audit process, it was discovered the McKinley High School athletic department, as it relates to required paperwork and its adherence therin, was/is in disarray. The documents present were not completed and there was an abundance of missing documents, all of which have, and to continue to, result in the ineligibility of players and coaches. This will result in forfeitures of games, contests, past postseason honors as well as future postseason honors."

A lot of missing paperwork and records. I’m assuming it was an active effort to cheat, but not a lot of detail was given.

No way this punishment was given for not keeping proper records. It sounds like the entire school administration are crooked

they had a few good basketball teams, boys' and girls', but in no way were they making an actual effort to cheat in all sports to that scale...

we can blame this on the split. without it, they never go to the softball tournament and play Mount Carmel who might as well be playing a different sport, and we never hear about any of this

how do we say that some cultures do paperwork better than others? can we say that? some places have more issues than others.

i'm gonna give our AD a hug when i see him...

I'm sure the tax payers of Baton Rouge are ecstatic about flushing another $42k down the drain. At least now it won't be spent on cigars.

Sounds like a serious case of “no bookkeeping is done at McKinley.”

Somehow I figure there are a lot more schools in the same boat, private and public.

Let me know when some of the hot shite football powers in the state get cited for something.
Big bad McKinley was taking over sports. What a joke.

I'm familiar with the paperwork that the LHSAA requires yearly on every student athlete. I've always thought that it was overkill and redundant to a degree, but it's something that has to be done. They are coming to check it, and every school knows that.

Former AD here... Each missing/incomplete eligibility form incurred a $125 fine

Each athlete is considered ineligible if their paperwork is incomplete/missing

Assuming they had 400+ athletes, you could easily reach that level if they all had problems.

Our policy was the papers all had to be submitted 1 week ahead of the first practice date. I used to have to chase coaches down, call parents, and ultimately threaten to not let them practice until I got the paperwork.

In my 5 years, we only incurred one fine for a missing parent signature.

I HATED the LHSAA audit process. They used to mark a form incomplete/fine you when a female student refused to state the date of her last menstral cycle.

The auditor would sit in my conference room for 3+ hours pouring through those papers.

Keeping the officially submitted LHSAA rosters up to date was very challenging but it behooved you to do so because most times you'd find a student on there that had not actually played for the team.

The McKinley AD should never work for another school again...

You get two audits per year. Fall and Spring. heaven help you if your Spring audit is fricked. The olympic sports have an incredible amount of roster turnover

I doubt it was an active effort to cheat, more like an active effort to field a team. They were probably just grabbing female students who would play that day.
Their opponent Mt. Carmel scored 18 runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Mt. Carmel pitcher retired all 9 batters in order. Game was called after 2.5 innings do to the mercy rule.

If it wasn't for the stupid LHSAA split system, no one would have noticed. But when a team that has no business in the playoffs, is in the postseason things get looked a, like post season rosters.

quote:

During the game, it was discovered by the umpire crew that McKinley had eight players on its roster during the game that did not appear on the roster submitted prior to the start of the state tournament.

Prior to earning a berth in the Division I state tournament, McKinley had been outscored 90-0 in their last seven regular-season games.

Sounds remarkably like what I would hear from the baseball players who would go against a lot of publics like Northeast, St Helena Centeal, Jackson, and Clinton before the latter two merged into East Feliciana.

The teams were so obviously outclassed that they would take it easy on them after the first inning.

So the kids will be allowed to transfer and play somewhere else now without penalty since the adult public servants that are paid to maintain such records are completely incompetent- right??

Pretty sure CHS has already funded the kids they wanted from that district. But the more the merrier
