Looking back: How underrated was the Dolphins defense that Jimmy Johnson built from 96-99?

Players that Dolphins drafted under Johnson:
Zach Thomas
Jason Taylor
Sam Madison
Patrick Surtain
Jimmy also signed Brock Marion and drafted Kenny Mixon, Daryl Gardener, and Derrick Rodgers who were multi-year starters for them.
Dan Marino with this defense earlier in his career would have won a Super Bowl or at the least contented for one.

I'll never forget the Jags beating them 62-7 in the playoffs, and that score could have been a LOT worse.
That was the biggest arse kicking I've ever seen in the NFL.

Jimmy did a phenomenal job with the mid to later round picks with the Dolphins. Unfortunately, he also had some bad misfires with his moves in the first round.
1997- Drafted Yatil Green at #15 who was plagued with injuries and out of the league after playing only eight games with the Dolphins. The six players drafted after Green (Reidel Anthony, Kenard Lang, Kenny Holmes, Tarik Glenn, Dwayne Rudd, Renaldo Wynn) all would have been much better picks. Lang, Holmes, or Wynn would have been a really good bookend with Taylor and made their defense even more fearsome or beefing up the offensive line with Tarik Glenn to help an aging QB is never a bad idea.
1998- Had the #19 pick but traded down to #29. Could have drafted Randy Moss or Alan Faneca at #19. Instead, they moved down to draft John Avery who lasted one season plus one game with them.
1999- Traded down from #24 pick to the #27 pick (which wasn't a bad idea) but then traded down again from #27 to #39 to draft another running back, JJ Johnson. Why draft another running back with an early second round pick after drafting on in the first round in the previous year? Again passed over another really good pass rushing DE in Patrick Kerney that they could have drafted in they had stayed at #27.

I looked it up b/c I was curious, that ‘84 SB team had the league’s 7th best defense. Not too shabby. Too bad they got smoked in the SB by the ‘9ers and Marino would never get back to another one.

Yeah, but all that talent couldn't make up for Brock Marion's gawbage arse.

Didn't Dan Marino hate Jimmy Johnson?

those defenses gave up 100 points (38 & 62) in their last two playoff losses
