"Our game is under attack," Fedora told reporters. "I fear the game will be pushed so far from what we know that we won't recognize it in 10 years. And if it does, our country will go down, too."

quote:

"I'm not sure that anything is proven that football, itself, causes [CTE]," Fedora said. "My understanding is repeated blows to the head cause it, so I'm assuming that every sport, football included, could be a problem with that if you've got any kind of contact. That doesn't diminish the fact that the game is still safer than it's ever been because we continue to tweak the game to try to make it safer for our players."

Fedora said people -- he declined to say specifically who -- routinely used data on CTE to suggest the risk of playing football was too high. In turn, he said, participation rates in youth football have declined nationally, putting the game at risk.

"If you're involved in the game of football, you have to worry about that," Fedora said.

Keep up the good fight, Larry!

Come the frick on.

Its time to admit that banging your head against each other is bad for the brain. Helmets are used as weapons and current players were taught as yutes to lead with their facemask.

Game won't change until the young elementary kids today are the NFL stars. You can't change instincts. I haven't played football in 15 years and I'd still lead with my facemask out of habit I think if I had to tackle someone.

Sounds like he's lost touch with reality, to be honest.

Wtf? Our country will be just fine if football ever goes away.

He's awful. I saw someone the other day call him Dan WOKEn after one of his many SJW posts.

Every tweet he sends out is filled with comments from Tenn fans bashing him over the Currie text incident. It's quite humorous.

Don't go using common sense lest you want to be labeled as having low T.

When I saw that headline I immediately thought, "Oh shite, he's about to get slammed."

Very stupid take by Fedora. It's an absurdly high percentage of these NFL guys that have their brains analyzed that have CTE. It's almost 100%.

He's not wrong. Broke former players and opportunistic attorneys are going to litigate the game (as we know it) out of existence. Idiot sports-writers, WHO MAKE THEIR LIVING WRITING ABOUT frickING FOOTBALL, are leading the charge to eliminate the game.

The NFL has the money to settle lawsuits. Colleges, High Schools, and youth leagues do not, because the pool of potential plaintiffs is increasingly greater the further down in level of competition you go.

Youth leagues are going to stop existing (at least as to tackle football) because it's too expensive to insure against lawsuits from every loser who will claim his life his ruined because he played football at 10 years old. Less youth participation is going to lead to less HS participation. And likewise, HS districts/athletics associations aren't going to be able to afford/choose to pay for the insurance required to field a football team. The trickle up effect will reach college, then the pros because less and less people will be playing football.

Look, maybe some people think that is a good thing.

The nfl and NCAA still make big time $$$ off of football. Tackling has slowly been changing in college and more progressive high school teams to Hawk Tackling. It’s rugby style, and bc of its head placement you can practice it without pads and year round.

People will always attack football, to compare impacts that guys in the NFL have made for 20 years of football to high school kids who maybe played for 8 years in way less aggressive games. Numbers in Louisiana are up for youth football.

Does anyone know if CTE has been consistently discovered in people that only played high school or college football?

Closest I could find for an answer:

quote:

Researchers from VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) and Boston University School of Medicine looked at the brains of 202 deceased American football players. All told, the researchers found 87 percent of the players to have CTE, a degenerative brain disease commonly found in athletes and military veterans with a history of head trauma.

Among NFL players, that percentage shot all the way up to 99 percent. In fact, only one of the 111 deceased NFL players analyzed did not have CTE.

quote:

But it’s not just NFL players who are at risk. Among college football players involved in the study, 91 percent were diagnosed with CTE. Even among those subjects that only played high school football, 21 percent were found to have CTE.
