Lakers-Sixers finals Game 6 in 1980

Youtube one hour version
Kareem was out, and a rookie Magic was forced to play center. Lakers up 3-2 but game is in Philly and the Sixers are going to pounce or so everyone thought.
It was real interesting. Magic played center and at times resembled the sleeker, quicker centers you see today. The team was quicker than with Kareem.
It wasn't that Philly couldn't adjust, its just that it adjusted in the wrong way. Instead of playing their game, the Sixers started trying to go inside all the time to take advantage of the theoretical mismatch but they weren't used to playing the pound it inside game. They simply didn't have the front line to play that way and thus played right into the Lakers hands. was real interesting.
The Sixers were also completely outcoached.

Not to mention the game was tape-delayed by CBS in most markets throughout the country lol

Game prompts Philly to get Moses Malone. They end up winning it with him after becoming more physical inside. First minute of the broadcast Bill Russel foreshadows the victory —“Going to be interesting to see how the Sixers guard the Lakers. The quicker lineup is going to present matchup problems”

NBA wasn't that big back them. Hell, it was often fighting to stay out of bankruptcy. Bird and Magic somewhat saved the league and boosted it.
Also, what was the Friday night CBS lineup back then? Stations had choice of words airing game live or regular programming.
Dukes of Hazard, Dallas......

Sixers were playing one-on-one ball.
Magic was dishing to the open man.
It's how the Blazers beat the Sixers in the 77 Finals.

That’s when magic introduced himself to the NBA.... one of the greatest finals performance of all time.......

The announcers kept hollering for the Sixers to use bounce passes. They just kept passing straight while the Lakers just held up their hands. Result: Alot of steals or throwaways.

The Sixers didn’t acquire Malone until the 1982-83 season. Game 6 of the ‘80 Finals didn’t prompt the Malone acquisition but Game 6 of the ‘82 Finals may have because the Lakers beat the Sixers that season, too.
Sixers had quite the choking reputation from 1977-82, especially from ‘80-‘82. Lost to the Lakers in ‘80 and ‘82 and blew a 3-1 lead to the Celtics in the ‘81 EC Finals. They got Malone in summer of ‘82, went 67-15 the following season and blew through the playoffs at 12-1. That was Malone’s famous “Fo, fo, fo” comment and he was pretty close.
Dumping Malone set up the Rockets to get Ralph Sampson in ‘83 and Akeem (added the “H” later) Olajuwon in ‘84.

I believe - might be wrong - most of the country saw this game on tape delay. League was struggling back then.

That’s when the NBA was great......
FACT.
FACT.

No, you’re right. The ‘80 Game 6 is notorious for being on tape delay.

Game 6 (the deciding game) of the 77 finals between the Blazers and 76ers started at 12 noon local time on Sunday in Portland. CBS cut away immediately after the final buzzer to broadcast a ordinary golf tourney. Didn’t show the trophy presentation or anything.

It was to me! I was a fanatic back then! But yeah, Bird/Magic and then MJ in a few years really opened up the media to the NBA, not to mention, ESPN was blooming...

Little known fact: for a very brief period, Portland had Walton and Moses. Traded Moses for a first, and he was traded to Houston for two firsts.

Basketball today is horrible when you compare it to that
Just like baseball analytics ruined the game and made it sterile

Bird said he watched it late night at a bar.
"Couldn't believe it (watching Magic). I always wanted to play like that."

ECF, the Celtics put Bird on Dr J. When they were down 3-1.
Julius still gets mad about it.
