Kobe wasn't drafted by the Lakers.

*sigh

Kobe was drafted by Charlotte under order by Jerry West to complete the terms of the trade

Why would Melo leave NY?

Have you seen NYs roster? They are going to be 3rd or 4th possible 5th in the west with one of the highest payrolls. Unless Amare retires or agrees to void his contract they can't afford to sign any big time free agents.

The Lakers will probably end up rebuilding around Rudy Gay and it will be enjoyably bad.

Only way Rudy Gay gets paid by the Lakers is if he slips on some ice in Staples Center and sues

After they strikeout on all the big names, this will probably be one of their only semi-good options. The biggest reason nobody is going to sign there is Kobe now wanting to play past this year. The Lakers will never force him to cede control of that team. What superstar is going to leave the team where they're the #1 option to play second fiddle to a 36 y/o egomaniac?

The Lakers MAY strike out on LeBron, but they will get an elite player next season. Bank on that.

Have the league intends to tank in anticipation of the '14 draft. There are going to be some terrible teams this coming year and a lot of unwatchable games in the regular season and huge blowouts.

Didn't LA draft Magic? Weren't they the worst team the previous year? I would say that was "drafting into a new era"... unless I'm misunderstanding what you are saying.

I thirk the Lakers were third in the West in the 1978-79 season finishing 47-35

LINK

I think they had the rights to the first pick in the 1979 draft because that had belonged to the New Orleans/Utah Jazz but they lost that pick to the Lakers because the commissioner at the time thought them signing Gail Goodrich meant they should give up the rights to their first pick in the draft... terrible terrible outcome for the Jazz

Top 3 will be Melo, Love, and LeBron.

I'll bet the farm that Melo never plays for LA as long as D'Antoni is coaching. He had the worst year of his career playing in that system
