Kyrie Irving: There's no defense played in the NBA, we're playing like teams from the '60s

Kyrie Irving is a prolific scoring point guard who dropped 43 points on the Toronto Raptors on Friday, and he had kudos for counterpart Kemba Walker of Charlotte for scoring 60 against Philadelphia on Saturday and then 43 on the Celtics Monday. Walker then scored 43 in Monday night’s 117-112 win over the Celtics.
Yet, he has a theory why the NBA is seeing all these high-scoring games. Klay Thompson scored 52 two weeks ago in Chicago. LeBron James ran up 51 on Miami on Sunday. Scoring in the NBA is soaring.
“I think not a lot of defense is being played,” he said prior to the game. “Teams are scoring like it’s the 1960s or ’70s. It’s 132 to 112, 142 to 121. There’s no defense. There’s just none. We got into a Utah-Boston game and it’s [98-86] and you can see the difference in effort in every single night, which I get from an NBA player’s standpoint, the amount of games we play, but sometimes you have to make guys miss.
“We’re all NBA players and if you see an open look at the rim, I’m pretty sure we’re going to knock it down over 50 percent of the time if it’s wide open. More or less no defense and effort. That’s what it comes down to; nobody should be scoring that many points.”
Irving was adamant about crediting the skill of the offensive players but he said defense have to react accordingly.
“You have to give credit to the offensive players for making the shots but also I think the emphasis on making double-teaming and just getting the ball out of someone’s hands,” he said. “Just doing the little things to help your teammates guard a great player or a great team, just a total team effort and team collective activity to kind of limit those high scoring games.”

“I told you there’s no defense in the NBA”

This is why 80’s stats are shite.
You think defense is bad now??
Go watch some clips of typical NBA games in the 1980’s

Ironic that Kyrie says that, because he's not exactly a good defender himself.

All the old men here should love it because no defense was played in the 80s or 60s either

But the MSB told me different

There’s not any defense played in the NBA or NFL and it makes for a shitty product

It’s because teams are running the floor like crazy this year and getting a ton of transition buckets.
Faster pace = more possessions per game = more opportunities to score = more points.
Transition defense is the most difficult aspect of defense to do well.
To illustrate, last season the team with the fastest pace had a pace of 101.6. This season, that would only be good enough for 14th in the league. The team with the fastest pace this season has a pace of 107.12. That is WAY faster than the fastest team last season.
If you look at the defensive ratings this season and compare them to last season, they’re roughly the same.

The evolution of basketball rules have favored the offense over time. Hand checking should be re-allowed and get rid of defensive three-second violation then you'd see a little more defense.

It was a trade-off. Maybe slightly less individual 1-on-1 defense due to removal of hand-checking, but stronger team defense due to illegal defense rule change.

So Kyrie's uninspiring scoring and assist number are even more uninspiring than I thought

The stats are so inflated with the style of offense being played. Layup, dunk, layup, open three....repeat. Seeing a 6'10" guy dunk a ball isn't talent. They do have a handful of players that are great shooters most are just tall.

Big guys are better at shooting than they've EVER been.

Found the guy that doesn't watch but loves to comment on how shitty it is.

No shite. Kyrie has been playing defense like he was from the 1980s his whole life.

The 15th ranked scoring offense in the NBA this season averages 108.6 points per 100 possessions. Last season - 108.4 points per 100 possessions.
The biggest difference is pace.
