I remember shortly after retirement bill simmons talking about how kobe became obsessive about learning to evaluate investment opportunities. Reading like a maniac and calling people all hours of the night for info and advice

Apparently thats working out

So ESPN knows the value of the KO deal but no other news outlet has it?

Keurig Dr Pepper made out pretty well. Their $26.5MM stake for 15.5% is now worth $310MM if this valuation is to be believed.

for the record, not it's not. it's all almost random gambles with huge ROIs when you get lucky

there is no dedicated way to "learn how to invest". active investing is not the most optimal strategy. passiv investing beats it pretty much every time. hell, even the top finance guys can't beat indexes.

quote:

Stated differently, over the last 15 years from 2002 to 2017, only one in 13 large-cap managers, only one in 19 mid-cap managers, and one in 23 small-cap managers were able to outperform their benchmark index. So it is possible for some active fund managers to “beat the market” over various time horizons, although there’s no guarantee that they will continue to do so in the future. And the percentage of active managers who do beat the market is usually pretty small – fewer than 8% in most of the cases above over the last 15 years; and they may not sustain that performance in the future.

Why did you narrow down "investment opportunities" to trading?
I'm thinking more like business ventures

That's not very hard to do, especially if we were going to look at it in the context of language/grammar. Don't insult Kobe by mentioning him in the same sentence in that category.

If that's true, that's one of the cooler, more impressive things I've ever heard of.

It’s true - I recall Kobe saying how fun it was to learn the Slovenian language when talking to Sasha Vujacic during their championship runs.

This is very incorrect for top tier managers, if you look across asset classes, or extend out your time horizon.

The past 9 years have jaded the passive vs. active debate since passive outperforms over an extended bull market, yet does terribly worse in bear markets.

Perfect example is Japan. Indexing peaked in the early 90s prior to the real estate crash. The only reason ETF flows have picked up so much is the BoJ has bought ~70% of the index ETF market.

The top tier active managers have continually outperformed their indexes and passive counterparts. A lot of bad managers have underperformed and are having to close their doors, but that's a good thing IMO. Also fixed income managers will perform better than ETFs due to liquidity issues in the asset class.

Notice Kobe is smart so he’s stayed out of the political BS recently. Unlike lower IQ individuals like LeBron.

Also learned to speak French and Serbian while dabbling in Chinese (his biggest market). Anyone can “google”, it takes more than that to be correct.

i'm going to be honest i thought Kobe was such a sociopath that he was going to go all Howard Hughes and become a recluse with a terror chamber, but he's putting his focus into other areas and i salute him. he's producing quality content

By all accounts from “normies” who have met him, Kobe is extremely down to earth and very considerate of others*

* he was REALLY nice to that girl in Colorado

Recall him supporting video games and playing regularly playing Call of Duty online...so he advertises COD on a commercial. The SJW’s attacked him for “promoting violence and guns” and he promptly told them to suck his dick.
