Honest evaluation of the sport:
Things I liked:
-It takes a ton of upper body strength to lower a man to the ground
-It’s amazing how they’re able to get out of those pins (or whatever you call them) and keep balance to avoid hitting the ground
-They have a ton of endurance and they surprised me with how they kept going even when the rounds were adding up
-Lots of hype in the gym
Things I didn’t like:
-Parents (just like in every other sport) thinking whatever the other person is doing to their kid is illegal
-A little slow at times
-Hard to follow if you don’t know the rules
-Two straight guys making love
Final grade:
D+
They all have an impressive set of skills and are tough as nails, making for some entertaining fights, however at the end of the day it’s still two sweaty guys fighting to get on top of each other, while the ref does army crawls around them and everyone screams in bloody freaking murder.

Did any dads charge any student wrestlers?

Did you see any figure fours, sharpshooters, liontamers, mandible claws, or crippler crossfaces?

No, but a few got out of their seats and their wives had to hold them down, then proceed to scold them.

Any steel chairs or foreign objects? Any managers of the wrestlers who happen to hail from the country that the USA has the most conflict with?
If the answer is no, I would say your “wrestling” is fake.

If you ever get a chance sit in on a D1 or D2 college wrestling practice. Holy frickin god. Nothing compares to it. Those kids are monsters.

Their cardio is insane. There is nothing that really tries you out like competitive wrestling. There’s a reason all the guys from football would puke for a few days at practice. Not a knock either, just different and exhausting.

My 5 year old is in wrestling class. I've never been around it before and don't know anything about it, but after going to practices with him it's definitely something I wish I would have gotten in to as a kid.

It is a great sport. I am honestly surprised it never caught on more in the South. Besides Kentucky, southern states aren't that into Basketball, which is the main sport during wrestling season. The crossover with football, especially for O-line and defensive players, is massive. Double leg takedowns in wrestling make great tackling practice.
That is tough sometimes. The wrestling community recognizes that we need to make changes to spur action and excitement, which is good. It continues to change and evolve, which is healthy I think.
Overall, I wish more people got into the sport. "Pro wrestling" has been a significant cultural hurdle to get around, and the truth that there isn't any true professional ranks for wrestling beyond the Olympics.

Football ayers who wrestle become better football players.

It was catching on and it’s still a decently big deal around NOLA and BR in Louisiana, but when they killed wrestling in southern colleges due to Title IX, most all emphasis died

Are there now rules about cutting weight for high school wrestling? I remember it being pretty brutal 15+ years ago

Personally I think it's boring to watch. That being said the sport is absolutely insane. You're telling kids and young adults to get an insane amount of core strength and learn how to cut weight to make multiple weight divisions.

Wrestling is a great sport. I’ve lived in NJ and PA, at the high school level it is nearly on the same level as football.
Very intense and passionate fans and the gyms are always packed. Makes for an exciting sport to watch if it’s a big tournament or competitive dual meet.

I grew up in wrestling, played football but wrestling was where my true talents were. Being from NJ, it was just a bigger deal.
The thing I will say, I moved to South Carolina in middle school, and football practice was absolutely nothing compared to wrestling. A lot of my football teammates would be puking and passing out in wrestling practice and they nearly all quit within a week. Two a days were easy for me because of wrestling.
Only downside, and anyone that has wrestled will agree with me: cutting weight/making weight absolutely sucks.
