Joe Namath was really overrated
Posted by BowDownToLSU

He is only in the HOF because of
Namath also had a 50.1 percent career completion rate. In 2007, all 32 NFL quarterbacks who qualified statistically had a completion percentage of 52 percent or higher.
Leading his team to a Super Bowl III victory would tend to make you assume he was a consummate winner, but that is largely untrue. During his career he won 77 football games, lost 108 and had three ties.
quote:this prediction. He criticized Zach Wilson but other than the Super Bowl win really sucked,Namath finished his career with 173 TDs, 220 INTs and a 65.5 quarterback rating. By comparison, Rex Grossman, Tim Couch, Quincy Carter and David Carr all have superior quarterback ratings for their careers.
We’ll win the game. I guarantee you.”

You're not wrong
But Joe put the NFL/Super Bowl on the map w/his guarantee, and that's the main reason why he's in the HoF

Yeah he kinda sucked but he 100% fulfills the "can't tell the story of the game without him" requirement.

Check out the stats of Terry Bradshaw and Phil Robertson when the played at Tech. They are laughable.

Yeah, he went to Bama, but Joe is Western Pennsylvania/Yinzer to the bone. The pride of Beaver Falls. (25 miles west of Pittsburgh)

Most athletes compared to today's athletes are absolute trash that boomers worship

I agree Namath is overrated as an NFL QB; however:
If this is how you make your argument, then you have zero clue about the different eras. Go look at the current Top 10 All Time in QB rating and completion percentage and tell me what you notice.

You compete in the era that you’re in. Stop with this.

Namath's stats are bad compared the other HOF guys from his era though

They are, and I don’t disagree with the premise. But the examples he used for his argument are garbage.
Compare within the era, and the point is made. Namath was not the quality QB that Starr, Unitas, Dawson and Tarkenton were.

Wasn’t he the first NFL QB to throw 4,000 yds in a season?
That’s pretty damn impressive considering the era and the 14 game slate.
He is way deserving of the HOF…
