Jerry West threatens legal action over portrayal in HBO series “Winning Time”

Last week, West expressed his unhappiness with the way he is portrayed in the series through a letter to HBO from his attorney, Louis R. Miller.
“You replaced the real Jerry West — a consummate professional — with his polar opposite, then portrayed this lie to the public as genuine,” the letter read. “You thereby violated the law.”
The letter also said: “To mitigate the harm you have caused, we request the issuance of a retraction of Winning Time’s false depiction of Jerry West no later than two weeks from the date of this letter. You also owe Mr. West an apology for your hurtful misrepresentation of his work and legacy, plus damages for the harm you caused to his well-earned and stellar reputation.”
Although the letter seemed to suggest some legal action might take place if those demands aren’t met, West apparently confirmed that to be his intention during his discussion with Dwyre.
“The series made us all [the Lakers] look like cartoon characters,” West told Dwyre. “They belittled something good. If I have to, I will take this all the way to the Supreme Court.”

Being wrongly portrayed as an alcoholic nut probably wouldn’t fly with most people

I wonder if the Buss family helped with the portrayal of West. The kids are incompetent, jealous, and stupid enough to do that.
The management speaks for itself. They were well run for decades under West and it has been amateur hour since he left.

This is part of why I haven't been a fan of this recent rash of fictionalized, dramatic biopic type movies about recent history. You either get good luck story movies that are basically approved by the subjects, like Rocketman or Bohemian Rapshody, or you get people playing fast and loose with character portrayals that could still harm real people or their families.

HBO responded that it was not intended to be a documentary and they would not issue an apology or retraction. BS on their part.
They used his real name and then dramatized him as a drunk alcoholic maniac.
HBO should pay out.

It's not like Jerry buss is portrayed as being all that great. They even make Kareem seem like he's slightly autistic

Has anyone watched it? Is it any good?

Jerry Buss was one of the best owners in sports. So it's likely a lawsuit that comes from this?

It holds my attention. You can see at least a couple sets of titties each episode.

This kinda makes his hot-headed character on the show appear accurate.

Maybe Jeannie. She's portrayed as a young woman who is discerning and serious and doesn't approve of Daddy...
Speaking of which, her Dad played by John C. Reilly is an older version of Reed Rothchild from Boogie Nights...Magic is a smiling sex addict and not much else besides Rah-rah buffoonery, Pat Riley is a no confidence totally lost wandering soul who gets bossed around by Chick Hearn and Paul Westhead is portrayed by Jason Segal as that scared shitless clueless crybaby in Forgetting Sarah Marshall who apparently doesn't know anything about basketball despite winning a Championship. And Kareem, has only 3 traits...he prays 5 times a day, doesn't talk to teammates and leads the team in scoring and rebounds.
So yeah, Jeannie is probably the scriptwriters mole as she's been known to shite on every Lakers from the past.

Aren’t defamation lawsuits hard to win? Didn’t some media outlet outright lie about Sarah Palin and get away with it?

I was wondering that too. I would imagine it would be difficult to prove.
