Jerry rice says coaching is starting to cross his mind because of Deion Sanders

LINK
Before he became the greatest wide receiver to step foot in an NFL stadium, Jerry Rice starred at Mississippi Valley State.

And now, with a renewed spotlight on HBCU football and longtime rival Deion Sanders coaching at Jackson State, Rice told Sports Illustrated that he's starting to think about coaching.

He said he hadn't considered the idea until Sanders was hired.
"I feel like I played the game for such a long time and I was just totally committed," Rice said. "I just poured everything into my career that I didn't have anything left because as a coach you you don't really have a life. life. I mean, coaching. It is hard, man, it takes up the majority of your time...

"But yeah, it takes a total commitment. And you got to be all in. So, it started to cross my mind just a little bit, now"

Speak it into existence. I know it’s not much but how does running up the Indian mounds compare to his hill in California lol?

Dadgum, Deion's making a bigger impact now than he ever did as a slightly overrated (but still elite) NFL player. Anyone who argues with me over this will lose so stop.

Good for them man. People always talk about discrimination, lack of equality, etc. But it’s all talk. These cats are going out, changing what they perceive as wrongs and putting their skin in the game to make a difference instead of yelling about how somebody else should.

It’s quite refreshing, so props to them.

It would be absolutely hilarious if he went on down to his alma mater. Jackson State was atleast already a solid program before Deion.

Mississippi Valley is basically the Vanderbilt of the SWAC, except they don't have academics going for them either.

Some of the SWAC schools it seems are in awful locations. MVSU, Alcorn St., Grambling, UAPB for sure.

I agree, but Rice said nothing about coaching HBCU'S... Unless you all understand that p5/g5 would never give him an opportunity like an HBCU.

Jerry Rice #undeveloped HBCU player.

While Rice has the gravitas & HBCU credentials, I believe Ray Lewis is another Hofer that has the charisma to do what Sanders is doing.

I don't think he has to be limited to Valley( struggling) , but I'd like to see him go back to an HBCU. Rice doesn't have the charisma of a Sanders or Ray Lewis, but he has credibility among HBCU fans. Who better to dispell the myth that you need tv / exposure or a P5 to succeed?

HBCUs should ditch the HB name and just try to be the best university they can be. There is no reason for labels like that in modern society. It's just holding them back.

They can call themselves " Toby" since it makes some people uncomfortable or reminds them of why HBCU'S were even necessary in the U.S. anyway? PWIs love to lash out when people question their traditions , history ,etc....but God forbid HBCU'S have a tiny bit of pride in theirs?
