NFL.com has provided evaluations for all of the prospects invited to the NFL Combine and former OSU CB Jeff Okudah received a glowing review.

LINK

Okudah received the 3rd highest overall draft grade behind Chase Young and Derrick Brown and received a comparison to one of the all-time great SEC and NFL DBs.

NFL Comparison

Patrick Peterson

Overview

Head coach and general manager's dream prospect with blue-chip physical traits, mental makeup and personal character. He has size, length and foot quickness to road-block press release and elite closing burst to close catch windows or eliminate yards after catch. He has room for improvement with his recognition and balance at the top of the route, but quarterbacks rarely target and beat him over the top. He has a rigid adherence to technique, but squeezing coverage even tighter and trusting his traits, talent and recovery speed could make him one of the top shutdown corners in the game.

quote:

Strengths

Self-motivated and driven to succeed to honor his late mother

Height, weight, length and speed are top-shelf

Size to guard bigs and speed to check deep threats

Patient from press and rarely tilted by a shifty release

Crowds opponent tight to the boundary on outside release

Rare, rapid-fire foot quickness and turnover

Maintains feel and eliminates safe space on vertical routes

Keys receiver's eyes to find the ball with his back to the QB

Sharp swipes through the hands tilt 50/50 passes in his favor

Cheat-code explosiveness in burst to close

Breaks under ball-side hip to harass passing windows

Recovery speed and length to take more chances as a pro

Rangy from boundary to hash in Cover-3 shuffle

Chooses wisely when to strike and when to tackle

Willing to unload on running backs who test him

quote:

Weaknesses

Needs to play with consistently disciplined eyes

Some inconsistencies digesting route combinations

Uses feet over fluidity to swing his hips open

Slight gear-down making lateral transitions from pedal

Room for improvement with route anticipation

Average instincts and early response from zone

Momentum inhibits gather-and-shadow at the top of the route

Stays attached to blocks from big wideouts too long

Needs to be diligent in contain duties against outside run

Thoughts on the comparison/evaluation?

He said Quintez Cephus was the best receiver he went up against

(yes, I know that's not Okudah, but it was a circus catch Cephus made against OSU in the B1G title game)

Peterson was very good in his prime but he isn't an all time great in the NFL.

Peterson, in my opinion, is an all-time athlete at the DB position. But, I never felt his technique was on par with his athleticism like a Deion Sanders.

Someone told him today that there are times he gets "sloppy" in coverage, he asked them to explain and this guy said he's gotten PIs and Holdings.

He responded that he had 0 PIs and 0 holdings calls against him all year.

I think he's damn good, but he may not have been really good until the 2nd half of his sophomore year.

Like for example, he didn't walk onto the field like Stingley and be a game changer as a first day CB.

Peterson would have been better as a safety. But yeah the hype for him never matched what he actually did on the field.

Time will tell how he produces in the NFL, but he’s probably the best OSU corner I can remember watching (Winfield is right on the edge of where I can remember watching games).

He’s practically made in a corner lab too in terms of physical measurements. Can’t wait to see his combine field numbers.

But who did he really shut down? He faced one elite receiver this year and got burnt like crispy toast. Washing out scrub receivers is high school stuff

Is this a Weakness or a strength for the NFL?

Fans have adapted and become great at spouting off advanced statistics, but absolutely no one outside of DB coaches and scouts know what to look for when judging categories like this.

On the other hand, not being some numerical objective standard, allows fans to argue about things with each other in a subjective way that keeps the sport interesting to people with lesser knowledge of the game.

A guy that had no holding or no pass interference calls against him all year going against the best guy everyone has is pretty fricking impressive.

Well he’s no Malcom Jenkins, who is the best college CB ever drafted in the 1st “16 picks to immediately get moved to safety and play nothing but safety for his entire career.

Very possible. I was 8 in 1997 so I had no idea what the frick I was watching.

Springs, Winfield, Gamble, and Okudah were all scary good.
