It's not just that they beat Virginia.......it's that it looked like they were SUPPOSED to

Most huge upsets are games where you feel like if they played again in a couple days, the favored team would win as it was supposed to. Often, it feels like that even during the upset game. Like there's an element of luck, or the favored team just is a shade off.

UMBC beat Virginia like it was SUPPOSED to beat them.

If you knew nothing about the teams other than watching them today, you'd bet on a game in 3 days going UMBC's way again. Confidently.

I’d bet UVA in the next game.
Wonderful story. Awesome win. KSU will crush them.
Hope not but it is so.

Well. So would I. But that's because I know what happened before today.

If the only game you had ever seen these two play was today, you wouldn't even know why people were surprised

And that's what I mean. Most of the time when I see a huge upset, I spend the entire game thinking, "sheesh, this other team is noticeably better but can't put them away".

UVA looked absolutely un-athletic, un-inspired and playing 1950's basketball.

UMBC schooled them on the playground. UMBC players flew by UVA players like they were standing in mud.

How UVA dominated the ACC is beyond me. They looked like they were playing in a different decade.

Honestly, not to be all tinfoil about it. But several UVA players flat looked like they weren't trying.

I mean, yeah, using any one game sample where one team dominated the other (even if they had inferior players) you’d go forward thinking they were better.

Omg Troy football is light years better than LSU if you just look at that one game!!!

Normally HUGE upsets, the underdog doesn't dominate.

Under no circumstances could you call Troy LSU 2017 a huge upset. Hell, if they played 5 times last year, you'd legit expect that Troy would win 2.

I think the nature of modern college basketball makes it less of an upset than, say, Princeton beating Georgetown in 1989 had it happened. I think most people thought it was only a matter of time before a 16 beat a 1.

In terms of general perception, Virginia isn’t on the same plane as Duke, UNC, Kentucky, etc., so it lacked some gravitas.

Now, the way UMBC, which almost no one had heard of, beat an ACC team with only two losses all year was nuts.

Who knows...game was strange...you expected this big surge from a power champion and it never happened. There was no dog in the fight.

You can rewatch the highlights...the announcers talk about uncontested layups left and right.

The Retreivers did shoot 50% from the 3-point line and as Jay Bilas said that's the great equalizer in CBB especially with a slow down team like Virginia.

But I understand why people are uncomfortable with this upset. Virginia either fooled the entire ACC for an entire year...or their players for whatever reason didn't care in that game.

I mean, they gave layups away...didn't even try to foul. It's the strangest big upset I've ever seen. And your gut felt weird about it.

But like I said, if you're going to nail 3-pointers all night and Virginia is going to settle for 2s - not a big surprise who is going to win.
