On top of free agents out of work - still around 3 dozen or so ....

The Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance against the Miami Marlins, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays, accusing the teams of failing to appropriately spend revenue-sharing money.

Union spokesman Chris Dahl, speaking Tuesday at the union's training camp for free agents, said the grievance was filed Friday. Union head Tony Clark declined to comment.

"We have received the complaint and believe it has no merit," Major League Baseball said in a statement.

No, Players Union and MLB are in contract through 2021. Nothing will happen before then.

No, I think they address this though before the next bargaining date. I think they reduce the amount of time that teams can control players or they make it were local teams can offer more money to a player without a penalty from the luxury tax.

MLB Free Agents are a joke, the reports of what JD Martinez and Yu signed have been out there since the free agent period started. Those players chose to wait until now to sign because they wanted more money. Teams are smarter than before and they want to pay for future success rather than past success. Next year with Bryce, Manny, and Clayton you will see some 200 million deals easily.

Look at this year, trades were popular because teams didn't value the free agents.

Makes sense.

Harper will definitely get a huge deal.

This past year's class is some older, not sure how much they have left type deals.

I know the Orioles were pissed about the lack of trade interest in Machado since they will probably lose him to free agency.

Well the fact they have no real leverage since teams know he is going to test FA

Tampa and Miami have failed to support their teams since day 1 it seems.... Oakland just has a shitty park

Of course Cleveland has sucked lately supporting their team.... I mean they've been contenders for 3 years and failed to draw 25k fans a game.

They don't support their teams. Lack of corporate support as well. Shitty stadiums. Shall I go on?

Do you honestly think that really matters? MLB wants great images when broadcasting. Bays, buildings, and locations with warm weather. The last Marlins owner purchased the team for a few hundred MM, and flipped it for 1.5 billion. Getting average fans in the stands doesn't really factor into the decision. This isn't the 80s. There wouldn't be a league if you only had teams in NY.

ETA:

What needs to happen is a change in pay structure. Giving a 35 year old a max long term deal is a disaster for an organization.

Yet other smaller venues, they don't have this problem yet it has been a problem in Florida since both of these teams were established.

Nashville, San Antonio, Portland, Vegas, Austin, and Charlotte seem like they would be a better place even though Tampa and Miami both rank in the top 16 media markets.

I had a friend move down there. I've been able to go a bunch over the past 2 years. Their stadium is very nice.

I think the talk of number of free agents still out there is way overblown. There are always a good amount of free agents that are forced out of the game via attrition. It’s just a late developing market this year, but everyone who deserves to be on a roster will be on a roster when it’s all said and done.

Ben Lindbergh at the Ringer recently did a study that found that players have been getting ~50% of the revenue since 2010 when you count salary, benefits, postseason share, etc

Thats in line with all the other major leagues. Now most MLB players get screwed over by the 6-7 years of control teams can use on them which makes it to where they hit FA at around 30 and unless you are a star, teams don't want to pay you anything significant. Not sure what chips the union has to negotiate with though

Probably not much to bargain with, but an argument could be made that the 6 years of control should include time in the minors. That would prevent Harper/Bryant situations.
