I’m not a huge basketball fan, but dang it sure seems like of the basketball I’ve watched recently that there’s been a lot of missed free throws.

College basketball is garbage. That’s what makes it exciting.

If they could shoot them from the 3 point arc then it would improve

The women seem to shoot them better

There are two game situations that are difficult to replicate in practice when it comes to practicing free throws: fatigue and pressure.
If was Oats, next year at the end of every practice, each player would have to run to the top of Coleman, across, and to the other side, 40 times. 40 round trips. Shoot 40 free throws, 4 at a time. Every made FT is one less trip. You make 3 of 4, you run one round trip. Then you shoot 4 more, then run. Then 4 more. If you make all 40 free throws, you don't run at all. To get better in late-game situations especially, you have to somehow replicate fatigue and pressure in practice.

After having played 30+ very physical minutes of full-court basketball? Combined with the high stress of being on national television and your season possibly being over if you miss?

It’s actually kind of fascinating how consistent free throw shooting percentage has been in the NBA over time. It’s basically remained unchanged going back to the 70s.

If you go back to 1970 the average is indeed remarkably stable with no long-term trend up or down. The average over those 50 years is roughly .760. The lowest in the time frame was .728 and the highest was .777 (last year).
