I assume it's because of the image. No way to know if it's real or not on television.
Yep, that was why I didn't know how they could enforce a rule where both are used in the same manner but banning the fake stuff makes sense. I just would go ape shite nuts not playing baseball without a dip (fake or real) in my mouth. Sunflower seeds and gum don't cut it for me.

I know Harper always has a fat dip in, which is weird because he's Mormon and I didn't think they could have caffeine.

Okay what does caffeine have to do with him dipping

I started because all my teammates did it as well. Playing baseball is the only reason I started. But it wasn't because my favorite big leaguers did it.
But would you (and your teammates) have started were it not ingrained in baseball culture? And would it have become ingrained in baseball culture if banned at the big league level?
A bunch of us started dipping during practice as high school freshmen. I doubt any of us were trying to emulate a particular player, we were just embracing the culture that we learned about watching MLB and trying to look cool.
MLB is trying to eliminate it from baseball culture, and it shouldn't take much longer (with it already prohibited in MiLB and NCAA). Once it is eliminated from baseball culture, kids will stop incorporating it into their baseball experience.

Supposedly, his is something "herbal."

They are trying to push coffee grind dip pouches more now on players and coaches. Saw some from SHark Tank called Grinds making it big now.
They've been pushing alternatives for years. Back in the early 90's it was ground up tea leaves dipped in molasses.
Now it's coffee grinds dipped in whatever.
Gary Sheffield used to have a pretty big dip in...
George Brett chewed instead and always had a wad of leaf in.
There was this one pitcher for the Expos? Who used to put in basically a whole pouch of Red Man because he couldn't stop smiling when he threw a curve and to stop tipping people off he put a baseball sized wad in his left cheek.

I watch probably 5-6 MLB games a week, and I can assure that there is not a single game goes by where I do not specifically notice players/coaches with dips in and spitting. Most times it's when the camera is on the face of a pitcher or batter between pitches or when it shows the coach on the phone or some BS. I know some do bubblegum/seeds, but it pretty unmistakable when you see someone spit with a dip in. I know because I dip and have since I was 15.

Would MLB allow Swedish Snus at all levels?
Swedish government claims 100% that their product cannot contribute or cause cancer.
The incidence of oral cancer is relatively low in Sweden and the use of snus is a frequently occurring habit among men.
Swedish scientists have therefore found it important to examine if there is an association between use of Swedish snus and cancer.
Use of Swedish snus is not a risk factor for oral cancer.
No association has been established between use of Swedish snus and neck and oesophagus cancer.
The mortality from cancer is not increased among Swedish snus users.
No increased risk of oral cancer could be observed among the snus users. By contrast, smoking and alcohol consumption were risk factors for this disease.
Or is the corporate world and sports really just worried about appearance?
Is it really about cancer or just anti-tobacco no matter what?

I dip.
Started out of pure boredom and to pass the time.
I wish like hell that I had not.
Tried to quit many times. Failed every time.
Got a dip right now.

Everyone on our football team dipped. That's where I picked it up, not baseball. Even the soccer players did tobacco but loose leaf.
But bus rides home everyone was dipping after football games, some played with a dip in.
The school made us try the herbal thing because dipping was so prevalent. Never stuck. Everyone just wanted Cope.
It wasn't because of MLB players or whatever, like I said it was among players that loved Football.
MLBs influence is overblown.
I think it's attached to baseball but it can be prevalent anywhere in the country for whatever reasons.
That's the only thing you can do is make the price unreasonable. I had an Uncle from Louisiana who smoked everyday. He said once they raised the price of a pack of Luckies from 25 cents to 55 cents from the 50s to the 60s he quit.
Football players have also always dipped. John Elway was a big Dipper.

Good god, it's their fricking body.
Most people aren't allowed to smoke or dip in their office, so why should the MLB be different? Because they didn't begin to follow the trend with the rest of the country until recently? If the MLB thinks the visuals of players dipping during games is damaging to their product and overall messsge they're trying to send, then they have every right to implement rules forbidding such behavior. The players can dip all they want on their own time just like smokers can smoke on breaks during the work day.

It's impossible to prove one factor on why someone got cancer. We can make reasonable inferences, however.

Fake dip is banned as well.
I switched to fake dip in my rec leagues because of the habit and while it's not the same, I'm glad it's an alternative. It's crazy to think of being on a diamond playing ball and NOT having a dip in
good on MLB for trying to do away with it so it's no longer ingrained in the fabric

Still is, as far as I can tell. But as someone who could have very easily gone pro in baseball, maybe not the best example you could have used.
