Irv Cross, a former NFL defensive back who became one of the cornerstones of The NFL Today in the 1970s, has died. He was 81.
The Eagles announced his passing on Sunday night.
Cross played for the Eagles from 1961 through 1965, and again in 1969. He spent 1966 through 1968 with the Rams. Cross was a two-time Pro Bowler, in 1964 and 1965.
After his playing career ended, Cross became a broadcaster with CBS in 1971. Cross formed part of the legendary team that launched The NFL Today in 1975. The show became appointment viewing, with Cross joined by Brent Musburger and, eventually, Phyllis George and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder.
Cross worked on The NFL Today from 1975 through 1989. He received the Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award in 2009.
We extend our condolences to Irv’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Brent, Irv and The Greek were great. Only pregame show that’s ever really mattered except for College GameDay before Fowler left. You only got 30 minutes, but you got more information in that half-hour than you do on all of the bloated pregame shows today.

My first memory of Irv Cross: all the NFL Top 10 episodes which featured him in footage segments from the era, loved the segment which included him asking Jim Brown whether he was the greatest to which Brown replied "Taking everything into consideration, I have to be number one." CLASSIC.

Eh, Phyllis was nice to look at and she was able to get good info in interviews. But whenever she had to ad-lib during the show, her lack of football knowledge was obvious.

I always enjoy watching old footage of him, Musberger, and Jimmy The Greek. I was too young then to appreciate how good the talent CBS had. I wish I got to see more of him.

So true. I have no interest watching lame comedians, lousy impersonations, weather forcasts, and boring player interviews that is nothing but worthless small talk. The pregame shows were so much better then.

Nostalgic.
That was State of the Art TV back then.

He left CBS in 1994 and when he was with them, the NFL was so much better than this watered down crap we see today.

Man, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. He was a good addition to the NFL Today.
