"Unfortunate and disappointing" and "sad and divisive".

As a member organization of the National Football League, that is verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry ironic.

https://nypost.com/2017/11/03/saints-in-public-feud-with-veteran-over-anthem-protests/

quote:

Retired Navy Cmdr. John Wells, executive director of the Louisiana-based Military Veterans Advocacy, was selected by the Saints to receive its Peoples Health Champion Award for highlighting the “health and well-being of our military, veterans and their families,” according to the team’s statement Thursday.

But Wells told the organization Wednesday not to expect him at the game, since he’s unable “in good conscience” to enter an NFL stadium where some players continue to “disrespect” the American flag by kneeling or sitting before or during the national anthem.

“Although I am touched and honored to be selected for such an award, the ongoing controversy with NFL players’ disrespect for the national flag forces me to decline to participate in the presentation,” Wells said in a statement, according to the Times-Picayune. “Since this award is tainted with the dishonorable actions of the NFL and its players, I cannot accept it. To do so would be hypocritical.”

quote:

“We respect his decision, he has that right, and we thank him for his service to our country and his past efforts on behalf of the military and veterans,” the statement read. “Throughout Mr. Wells’ media appearances today, he has stated he no longer supports NFL football.

“That is unfortunate and disappointing considering the New Orleans Saints’ unwavering 50-plus year commitment to honor, support and recognize our servicemen and women and veterans. We will not allow Mr. Wells’ decision and subsequent media appearances to distract our players and organization from continuing to honor and support our military and veterans.”

The team said it now plans to “move on from this sad and divisive discourse” and return its focus to supporting the nation’s service members and their families.

The irony is so thick, you'd need a steak knife to cut it.

Kenny Vaccaro doesn't want Saints fans to show up if they don't agree with kneeling before the Anthem

Unfortunately, the Saints, and the NFL, are sports organizations. They belong on the More Sports Board.......

Seems like Saints should've taken high road and released a simple "we respect his decision and thank him for his service " here.

I didn't say it did.

What I meant was these kind of things rile other people up, and then you and Shell get in here to play Captain Contrarian and the thread goes on for 73 pages.

I honestly have never seen something handled worse from a PR dept

It was so simple for them to do that. Instead they went after and belittled him Like a petty teenager

The Saints PR must he handled by a 5 year old.

This paragraph was great, and should have been the end of it

quote:

“We respect his decision, he has that right, and we thank him for his service to our country and his past efforts on behalf of the military and veterans,” the statement read.

Then, in an act of almost unknown stupidity, they decided to try and piss off as many people as possible because they are petty and have zero self awareness

quote:

1. This has nothing to do with the first amendment.

2. The vet is attention whoring just as much as the players, especially if it's correct that they've all stood since the Carolina game.

3. Yeah what a horrible PR response. That's like arguing with your wife, coming to a truce, then tossing out an "I'm still right and you're an idiot" then walking out the door.
