Currently on NBCSN.

Fernando Alonso and his McLaren entry have been bumped and will not race in the Indy 500.

The “Fast Nine” are running for the pole now.

McClaren underestimated the task at hand. All they can do now is write Juncos a huge check and buy that ride. It won’t surprise me if they go that route.

That McLaren showing reminded me when Penske had to take all 3 home one year after Lil Al won his last one.

They say they won’t buy a ride.

That was the most interesting qualifying I recall watching in some time. Not overly complicated format. Lots on the line in that bump session. David beat Goliath.

Alex Zanardi had the best tweet for McLaren.

In fact, as a fan, I wanna thank you all for at least proving that all the American Teams, drivers, aren’t Primitives easy to beat... they’re all talented and they well know their business. It’ll take a year for a new opportunity, but I’m sure you’ll write a different story then!

I'll root for McLaren and Alonso when they enter IndyCar full-time. Until then, frick 'em.

Penske has how many poles now? It’s over 25 isn’t it now?

Kinda sad that only 36 cars were entered. There used to be 60-70 every year.

I would imagine that, much like NASCAR, it has become too expensive for smaller teams/investors to field even a single car team and there is too little sponsorship available to cover those costs.

The whole point of indy is that you shouldn't have to enter full time. Has been that way forever.

Right. A shitload of teams would just load up for that one month.

Anyone else going down (or up) for it?

We're heading down saturday and going to the Zac Brown concert inside the oval Saturday afternoon. Will probably walk the campground beforehand and soak in the "culture".

Tower Terrace on race day.

Always a great time.

Let me expound on my comment with a comparison. Conor Daly is in the Indy 500 but like Alonso I don't think he's entering any other Indy races this year. The difference between Daly and Alonso is that Daly wants badly to be in the series but is having trouble getting sponsors. Alonso can do whatever he wants to do, but at the moment he only sees the Indy 500 as a feather-in-his-cap thing to complete a mythical triple crown, but he's shown no real demonstrated interest in the series. Just for that reason an IndyCar fan should root for Daly to win the Indy 500 over Alonso. Alonso entering the Indy 500 is good for IndyCar for one race. If Alonso had won in 2017 when he was on a good team, we never would have heard from him again. Alonso racing in the Indy 500 is good for IndyCar, but Alonso winning the Indy 500 as a one-off is not good for IndyCar, it's only good for Alonso. If Daly wins there's a good chance he'll get sponsorship to run more races or a whole season. So in conclusion, I want to see Alonso in the race, but I won't root for him to win if he's a one-off entry. I'll root for him to win if he enters the whole season, because that would be great for IndyCar.

So if he enters to race a whole season it somehow become good for Indycar longterm? I don't buy it.

You are right, no one outside of the midwest really cares about the Indy 500, far far fewer care about Indycar. Alonso entering the whole season wouldn't do much to make anyone care any more, unless he were going to take the championship.

Mclaren entering might bring a few more fans, but they would have to commit to America, and they have probably run the numbers and don't see it as being worth it.

Well agree to disagree. Alonso is still a significant star around the world. IndyCar would sign a bunch of new broadcasting contracts worldwide if Alonso signed up to run the whole series. They might even bring back a few more international races in places like Japan and Brazil (i.e., places that have drivers in the series but also host F1 races). Spain would be a good possibility, especially if they drop the Spanish Grand Prix.

If you are arguing that Alonso wouldn't do it for more than a year or two, and that doesn't help IndyCar's long-term prospects, I get it, but IndyCar has been getting stronger recently (24 full-time cars now I think), and Alonso would definitely add to the momentum.

If we are talking he signs a 5 year deal to race we may see some of that. The same could be said for several of the F1 stars, I just don't think Indy racing does anything for them.

Also I just don't think there is money there for the sponsorships.

I think it's cool to just have big names and good storylines. That being said I'm not a race fan and we just go for the spectacle of it and to have a fun weekend with buddies. Probably the same for many of the people there.

It was worse just a few years ago. The question then was whether they could scrape up 33 cars to make a full field.

I went a few years ago and it was worth the trip. Even casual race fans can appreciate the history of the place IMO.
